I've tried watching it, but it just isn't very funny. I think that it's become trendy to watch it. I get far more laughs out of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and hell I even get a bit of news with that one.

I watched one of his episodes last night, and I thought it was funny. He was writing lyrics and handing them to an opera singer for her to sing.

It is definitely overrated...

The thiing will Chapelle show is that he can be VERY fun... but the vast majority of the skits are boring as hell.

The best episode, by far, was with Wayne Brady as the guest host.

everybody has a different sense of humor, so it all depends on the person, im willing to bet urban dwellers with a low education level think its the best thing ever, and even if your not one of thoes people you can still like it. either way hes a great comedian

A lot of the humor is dependent on your familiarity with black pop culture, and sometimes not black pop culture, but just old stuff from the 90s and 80s. So if you grew up in a big city and went to public schools you've been exposed to the stuff and you'll probably like the show. If you were a nerd who was afraid of thugs and/or black people when you were in high school then the show isn't for you.

He's a great standup comedian, and while some of his skits on the show have been hilarious, but many of them just fall flat.

I loved Chappelle before hearing everyone else did too. I was kind of disappointed to learn it became a trendy show. That way, you get no credit for watching it. Nothing differentiates you between a trendy fanboy. Whereas the Daily Show.....that show is so bad, you have to be following your own beat to watch that crap. Congrats for forcing yourself to watch bad TV, so you don't appear to be a follower. ;)

Some of the episodes are overrated, most of the other ones are overplayed but were hilarious at first.

Speaking as a Brit who's seen a few episodes, it seems just to be Chappelle stomping around saying "I am black! Other people are not! This is hilarious!!!" I don't see it being at all clever, or particularly funny...

I had never watched the show before, so I decided to download one of his episodes to check it out. I watched the Rick James episode and laughed my a$$ off.

That's really the impression I get as well. Chris Rock plays that card too, but does it better I think!

As a non-white, non-Brit, educated person, i find it funny a majority of the time. To be honest, some of the sketches really do just fall flat to me, but just as many of them i can find funny. It really does have a lot to do with where you come from, and the type of humor you appreciate/understand. I like the fact that he has lowbrow stuff you can laugh at (the Lil Jon skits), and stuff that's both funny, and yet has a smidge of social commentary mixed in (the black Bush skit).

I've liked Chappelle since I saw him in Half Baked. His show is hilarious most of the time, but as with most skit shows, some skits are better than others.

I agree with that.

While I enjoy the show, he's also a prime example of the racial double standard in our society (i.e. if a white comedian ever made racially-influenced jokes, he'd be shot). And that bothers me.

I agree, whenever I've seen chris rock there's been more actual wit to his performance... Chappelle is very much 1) Take every-day situation 2) Change ethnicity of one participant 3) STEREOTYPE!!!!!

It's not big and it's certainly not clever.

its decent, but i think its still overrated. theres only so much that can be done and still be funny.
