of course not

i take it as a sign of indifference, at least on the internet. now if the person keep making errors on formal writing then i'd think something's wrong, but still not necessarily stupidity.

Do you stutter in your typing? If you use poor spelling on a forum it doesn't exactly show great intelligence.
At least I can claim it's not my first language if I make mistakes in English :p

I consider my grandfather to be one of the smartest guys I know, but he can't spell worth a damn! He never finished high school, but that doesn't make him stupid by any means.

My boss at work spells terribly.
He written a supervisor a formal letter of warning for inputting the wrong date in a date printer and the letter he written probably had fifteen to twenty spelling and grammatical errors. It even had the wrong year on the date.

It just seemed funnny that this supervisor was formally warned for mistyping a code into a date machine, and the warning letter had so many mispellings.

Bad spelling isn't proof of being stupid, but it can be used as good evidence to support the idea that someone is stupid.

I used to take it as a sign of lesser intelligence, up to a year or so ago. Then I started talking with my family much more than previously, and vastly widened my circle of online-chat-capable-classmates. I now treat it (usually) as a sign of indifference, unless it's in an official departmental email through one of my jobs.

Cheers!

Yes - especially in hand-written materials. On the computer, you have to make allowances for the fact that not everyone is 100% accurate @ 120WPM.

I get more upset about the slang-y style spelling.

When I see people type out:
"U R dum" and they can't even bother to spend the extra whole second to type out "You're dumb."

I don't really think they're dumb, just lazy and ignorant for saving that whole fraction of a second and looking like an idiot.

I spell very well.

I don't think people who spell poorly are stupid. I think that they either:

Don't pay enough attention to detail

or

Don't care

I don't think it is a bad thing. Just a choice.

Not necessarily stupidity, but it doesn't reflect well on the individual.

If you want people to take you seriously use the language properly.
