Well, the P4 isn't really up to standards, considering the ultrahigh clock needed to have better performance than current processors. Plus, the die is so damn big, you need some extra holes to mount the heatsink, etc. etc.

AMD may have a double-pumped core with the Sledgehammer (two cores in one) that have onchip SMP, plus 4-way multithreading. The EV6 bus is good for a LONG way yet, and with DDR and dualie up on the horizon, who knows what will happen?

Don't be so sure... we don't have a working test system to benchmark. It may rock, or it may suck.

This would be really really cool, but expensive.

I'll be convinced when I see it. I still remember last year's claims of "8 MB on-die L2 cache" by certain posters at Tomshardware and even some members here. Of course no one stopped to think how rediculously big 8 MB of L2 is at 0.25u.

Yes you are.

I'm waiting for the P4 to arrive and people like Anand tech to review it .... Then we can truly begin the Next-Gen Chip War :)

Transmeta has some slick silicon, but the TM5400 has an IPC 80% that of P!!! :( Still I wouldn't mind that for an extra few hours of battery life. If only the LCD screens didn't eat so much juice...

About a 4'-6' wave, nice shape to it though. Definately surfable, but Intel owns the hearts and minds of corporate America. Amd can make inroads, but I don't see a tidal wave.

Yes. Yes, I do. The picture is loud and clear in my mind, actually. I can completely understand and see how AMD could become the #1 PC microprocessor supplier. They are setting the stage very well right now. Intel is helping them.

When you think about it, it could easily happen. All it would take is for AMD to reign supreme in Performance/MHz/Price wars for another couple of years. It would eventually filter down into the masses.

AMD Inside! (Insert cheesy 3 note jingle here) Think AMD could be sued for using AMD Inside? Afterall, it is "Intel Inside" that's a trademark, not "Inside" :)

<< "I wonder if and when they become #1 if it will then be fashionable to root for Intel." >>

Hopefully Intel will have unloaded RAMBUS by then. Otherwise, we don't. :D

personally i hope that amd and intel keep struggling against one another... i don't want one to be too far ahead of the other...

currently Intel is bigger and has brand name recognition, but there 8xx series of chipset have either been shown no imporvment in speed compared to thier BX chipset or have been late to the market place.. Faster cpu's are hard to come by also.

Amd on the other hand seems to be able to supply high speed chips. Things are going well for them basically...

AMD i doubt will dominate the market. I buy AMD partially because i like them and also because we need them. We would probably all be running P-IIs and just be hearing about the P-III coming out instead of the P-4 if AMD didn't apply the pressure. This cmpetition keeps prices down, speed of development up, and us happy with our new expensive toys...

I'm kind of counting on what Cyrix may have up their sleeves next.

If things keep going the way they have been, I think Intel will lose all influence on the industry. Will AMD take over leadership? I don't know, but I think we could end up seeing AMD and Intel co-developing future standards. The reason I suggest that is that recently AMD's influence has been increasing dramatically, while Intel keeps leading the tech industry down deadends. Intel may very well be forced, out of self preservation and possibly by other industry leaders, to step back in an attempt to bring stability to the PC platform. Consumers are smart, they are beginning to see that many "must have" PC technologies are just marketing gimics and add to this the growing power with gaming consoles and you have yourself the groundwork for a technology that may get brushed aside. It's time for some real innovation, not just another AGP spec with a higher number attached to it!
