Wondering if you support what the ACLU does. Reasons, for and against.

I support some of it, not the extreme-whacko stuff. (Wow I just left myself open and bleeding for that one...come on, somebody, Russ, Ornery, Viper, etech, one of you...)

Where are the "yes" and "no" choices?

well, I didn't make it absolute, I think nearly all people can nit pick a few things, so I left the answer fairly general.

I'm sure that they do help people that truely were wronged. But, unfortunately the news only reports on the more controversial things like them fighting for the KKK, that MAMBLA?? (child porn group) incident, among others.

I remain ambivelent on judgement.

The ACLU has some good ideas, but they squander them on serial murders and kiddy porn addicts.

When it comes to REAL victims, they are rarely ever involved.

I'll take it on a case by case basis-- but mostly, they suck.

I don't agree with much of what they do, but I believe they serve their purpose. (Voted Yes)

Edit: I guess what I'm saying is I support their existence, just not so much their issues. :p

Hmmm...I haven't given them any money, any praises. I also haven't heard of anyone good they have defended lately or any good things they have helped enact. If it was a good cause once, then it sure has changed cause I don't see them do anything good anymore.

The ACLU really pisses me off sometimes, but you need a group that extreme to counter some of the truely evil stuff that come out of our "Just-Us" system. Hopefully, between the two extremes, a quasi palatable middleground is found.

I have to add, that after my recent experiances with the judicial system, I have to say it is not all that great, unless you are rich. Corruption at all levels from cops on up. Very, very bad.

Makes me think of anarchy....

For the most part they are just a group of pinko commies doing a nice job of using the legal system to screw up society to fit their leftist agenda.

However, on a few rare occasions they've tackled some good issues, especially involving freedom of speech.

So I guess they are 80% bad, 20% good in my book.

I admire the cause but not the methodology. As others have stated, they spend too much time defending criminals and truly sick people.

I think that a lot of people criticize what is truly great about this group. They are blind to the defendent and focus in on the issue. They are trying to defend the constitution and the rights that it gives us. Everyone loves the constitution until it gives rights to neo-nazis or the KKK. They are just the same, they are citizens like everyone else and as soon as the rights of the constitution stop applying to groups of people that the general population find despicable, we might as well get a time machine and travel back 50 years to good old Germany. The president of the ACLU(or atleast the president as of November, I think he might have retired or is going to soon) is a Jewish man. When asked how he can stand to defend neo nazis, he said something like, "We defends the rights of these people so that when a Martin Luther King Jr. or Ghandi needs those same rights, they will be there."

Having been involved in one of their issues personally, I can 'first handedly' say they are a bunch of over zealous attornies looking to make a name for themselves.

They're mostly making sure that everybody--including all of us here--are able to keep our rights. Sometimes that happens in an unpopular way, and sometimes I don't agree with them. If all you're going to do is pick out the parts you don't like and ignore the rest, you're not seeing the whole picture. I also acknowledge that some people insist on catagorizing everything, and want to agree with their peers who like to whine and complain about everything they don't agree with. Hell, I don't like lawyers, but we need them b/c that's our system. If you have to go to court, tell me you don't want the best lawyer you can get.

>insert lawyer joke here< What have you got if there's 9 lawyers up to their necks in sand?
Not enough sand.
