Vista, shut down when not in use. Save a few cents off the ol' energy bill.

Home computer - close lid.

If that sleeps or hibernates I have no idea. It works, and thats A OK for me.

At work I never shut down my computer unless I really need to. Windows XP. At home I always shut down my laptop at night because the sound gets all screwed up whenever it comes out of standby in Ubuntu 8.04.

Win7.
Hibernate.

I've been using hibernate since it was first available, on a socket A board if I'm not mistaken.

a regular desktop hard drive uses upwards of 10 watts when idle, and factoring in how inefficient a regular desktop power supply is when supplying that little wattage...

what's your specs?

i hibernate my gaming machine because the video card alone downs 50 or 60 watts when idle. gets too dang hot with that + the other machine + eastern, southern and western walls + no insulation in the floor (above the garage) + room is at the end of a long hallway and gets really poor circulation

I answered for my gaming PC, which is Windows XP hibernate. I turn it on when I get home in the evening and then hibernate it before bed. My HTPC has Windows XP on it, and I leave it running 24/7.

With my home Vista laptop, I alternate between hibernate and shut down. I would use sleep more, but sleep seems to cause my computer to not wake up properly.

But, I use roaming profiles, so logoff/logon takes much more time than any startup/shutdown time.

At home I would shut down because it would run up the power. At my dorm, on all the day til I sleep. My computer isn't that loud but has some noise.

XP - leave it running. I've started using hibernate, so if it's not doing anything I may start doing that instead.

I'll expand on that, if I had a choice of shutting down or putting the PC into hibernate/sleep modes, I choose to shut down. Startup doesn't take that long.
My bedroom media center (also XP) is shut down when I'm not using it.
Sorry didn't mean to ruin your day by confusing or misleading you. :(

When I'm at school, I'll leave my computer running for a week straight, but at home I usually shut down every night. I guess it's because I don't have to worry about my electricity usage at school.

I voted for my SO (Vista - Just leave it running) since none of the above applies to me (Mandriva Linux - Just leave it running).

Win7 - I shut it down if I am leaving for a few hours. No sense in having it burn electricity if I'm not going be using it.

My laptop I'm on now is Win 7 Pro and I put it into sleep mode when not using it.
My home server is running Server 2008 and it's never off or in sleep mode.
My work computer is running Win 7 and is never off either but it's because I need to have access to remote into it at any given time.
