Someone told me you get a closer shave after you shower but are more likely to get in grown hairs. Just curious to what everyone else does.

I like to complete this unpleasant ritual before shower, so that nothing would bother me. If I don't, I'd be dreading the perspective of shaving yet once again when I get out of the bath...

Well back when I shaved (trimming the beard is so much easier), I always did it before I showered. I use this face wash stuff in the shower, and I guess it leaves a little residue on the skin, because when I used my shaving gel after I washed my face, it got all sticky and gross. And it made shaving impossible. So not only was I not able to shave, but my face was all sticky. So...yeah, that's something I like to avoid.

Before, but I use 'lectric. After (for a while) the wiskers are too wet and it sometimes misses a few.

After. The warm water seems to soften the hair or something. It's easier to scrape off :)

I've read your supposed to do it after. It softens both the hair, and your face. This lessens razor burn. Also you risk dragging oil/ dirt into your pores before-hand. It sounds like a no brainer, but you are supposed to shave with the grain. Finally, douse your face with cold water when done. This closes your pores back up, and quickly soothes your face.

What do you guys do?

i use the electric before.(it's more of a trimmer) i use it on my face and on my scalp, then i'll shower and use the mach 3 for my face and head for the que ball look.

I use an electric shaver that is plugged into the wall when operating so during the shower isn't possible. I shave very close with it (stretch the skin then press hard) so I get a closer shave than I've ever been able to get with a razor. However, that irritates the heck out of my skin for the next 10 minutes. Soap and water in a shower would be very irritating. Thus I do it after the shower.

after

i read somewhere that your hair gets saturated with water, making the hair thicker and easier to cut.

Both. Use the beard trimmer to make things more manageable before hand. Then shower to soften things up, and then use a straight razor after I get out.

My whiskers have the feel of a steel wire brush and make shaving difficult
