I think that it's disrespectful when a child doesn't call men sir and women ma'am. We used to get spanked in school for that.

I'm not a child, and no, I don't say that.

I used to, but as you get older you realise that the people you used to call sir or whatever aren't as much older/wiser than you anymore, so you lose a little respect and see them more as equals. I may not call them sir, but I think I have a better understanding of what they do and more respect for them than when I had to call them sir (talking from a 16 year old students point of view).

Yes i do, as much as i can. I think it shocks people sometimes. I usually call ladies Miss though. I think it makes the older ones feel good!:)

Maybe elders (eg your boss) - but strangers? Bah. You earn my respect before you get any. Thankfully I'm old enough that 90% of them don't expect it any longer.

And god help you if you try to smack me or my little brother for "giving you lip" - because this "young whippersnapper" has no qualms about kicking your geriatric ass clear out of your Depends.

Only if they have not given me permission to call them by their first names.

Nope. If I did, I would have to call everyone "Sir" and "Ma'am", since no one deserves more respect than others.

It's built in to the Korean language (honorifics) so whenever I speak to a Korean older than me I'm basically saying sir and ma'am. I use sir and ma'am in English when addressing older folks (not baby-boomers).

Only when I'm on the phone with customer or dealing with authority figures like police officers.
