Only fruit peels, and that's if I can't find trash cans around (most of the areas I walk through are poorly-kempt college towns with beer cans strewn about, so I think a fruit peel is the least of their worries).

I'm really interested in knowing WHY people choose to throw their trash out on the road rather than waiting until they get home and putting it in the trash can. I have a feeling there won't be many people willing to explain themselves here, and yet I know there must be many people here who litter. So I ask you, why do it if you're not willing to own up to it?
Because 99.99% of the people are stupid, redneck, a******s, and should likely be shot on sight? Yeah, I don't understand litterbugs either. I just put my trash into a plastic grocery bag in the back seat of my car, and dump it the next time that I stop, or if it gets full.

It's worse because, at least in this state, you can get pulled-over/fined for tossing stuff out of your vehicle, and I've had friends (whom I no longer hang around with, because they match the above description), toss stuff out of my car before. Remember kids, LITTERING MAKES HULK ANGRY!!!

I have a feeling most people are motivated by laziness, and anonymity plays a big role in their willingness to do it. Next time you're driving past my house, keep the White Castle bags in your car please. Thank you.
What would be really mondo-cool, is a set of high-speed phalanx guns, like the anti-missile types that they have on ships, that would utterly destroy any litter that got tossed out in the general direction of your property. Yes, the car tossing it might get hit as well by the bullets... oh, too bad. :)

I honestly can't tell if you're deliberately trolling or if you're serious... either way your post isn't really worth responding to because of the astoundingly poor logic you use, but I'll humor you.

Imagine a world WITHOUT landfills. Garbage would be evenly distributed across the land. Would you rather live in that world or this one? Landfills serve to concentrate the garbage in one place, out of view. They also concentrate the environmental impact in one area, although if people were more responsible about recycling hazardous materials that would be lessened.

But I didn't say anything about litter being an eyesore or environmentally unfriendly in the OP. Whether you throw your garbage out the window or in a trash can, it will most likely end up in the landfill. The only difference is if you put it in a trash can, I wouldn't have had to spend any of my Saturday afternoon picking up other people's garbage from my lawn.

It's not mentioned in your post, but my favorite story of a fire started by a discarded cigarette is the one where the cigarette went out the front window and in the back window and burned the guy's SUV. And he got fined for littering. :)

I don't smoke but I would love for you and all smokers to ride behind me with your window open and I toss a lit butt out the window into your face. :| :disgust:

Why? Everybody throws cigarette butts on the ground because they are harmless.

I hope you're kidding.
