**POLL** Do you like .PDFs?

at least they're printer friendly.

if mere pdfs freeze up your computer, your computer is the problem.

I hate PDF's.
Especially when Im on a Windows box, since I haven't found any other readers besides Adobes, and that one blows bigtime.

Learn how to properly configure a PC.

I used PDF's ALL FREAKING DAY. I design books and ads for a publishing company. It's the #1 format to email and to FTP big image files. Works from Mac to PC seamlessly too. PDF's rock.

Quark to .EPS then distill to .PDF.

not a huge fan, but they can be useful for manuals and stuff....
too bad they can get so damn huge in filesize, and that makes even a fast computer load slowly sometimes!

I cannot stand them. Here are some reasons:
1) Often longer to download than necessary (when just a text file would do).
2) Horribly slow to open.
3) Cannot edit - makes required forms that you must type a pain (time to get out the typewriter again...) Note: this is improving slightly with the latest version of Reader where in some cases you can fill out but of course you cannot save your work for later.
4) Can cause lots of problems in IE.
5) Constant interuptions when using a PDF that I'm not using the most up to date version of reader.

There are other methods of distributing files without problems #1-#5. Heck with Open Office, anyone (PC or Mac) can read a Word document for free and you avoid all those problems...

Damn I forgot the most frustrating problem. You cannot usually read the text when first opening up a PDF. You must fiddle around with the zoom to find text which is clear. Often the only readable zoom is something odd like 142% (which takes forever to find) and then you cannot scroll one page at a time with the PGUP and PDDown keys unless you have an enormous resolution on your monitor.

They don't bother me much. I never really thought about it. Just another tool to use is how I've viewed them. I only use Acrobat Reader so it's not like I am developing them or anything.

They look great, except the damned plugin (or app itself) takes time to load up. It sucks especially when it opens up in IE and you hit the BACK button and it has to revert back.

I love them. They have a much more professional appearance for proposals and quotes. The end user most times will not be able to edit the document, either, which saves me time from rereading everything that has been signed. The format goes works easily on both PCs and Macs.

As said above, .pdf >>>>>>>>>>>> .doc

As said above, when your end users MUST edit it (as is the typical case for forms - which applies to about 95% of the PDFs I see) and they cannot, it really frustrates your end users... Please stop forcing us to get out typewriters or to print the PDF, get out the scanner, scan in the PDF as a picture, and use paint to type in the form data!

It used to be yes, that is, before Acrobat Reader 6 came out. I can't believe it takes 15 seconds to load a page in a webbrowser.

Good:
A fairly standard program, displays images well

Bad:
A real bitch to create text & image documents sometimes
Crashes many pc's on a regular basis
Ridiculous load time

My only problem is the long load time never crashed my PC and opera doesn't integrate it into the browser(although I hated when IE would take the time to load up reader)

pdfs are the bastard demon spawn of some devil from hell.
all things adobe are inherantly evil.
and most of the dumb motherfukers that send them my way
aren't smart enough to figure out ,even after being told, that
if you send me a god-damned pdf file that you are going to basicaly
get what the hell you sent me! so in short if you want you freaking
document modified or otherwise monkeyed with before I print it for you,
don't send me a p.o.s. pdf! and this is just my opinion at the moment, I
am acually working in adobe 6 professional on some jackasses pdf right now
and am sure that I will be in a much "better" mood in a while!

To everyone saying they take way too long to load and crash/freeze your comp:

It's Adobe Reader, not the .pdf that's to blame

I can open a .pdf in gpdf in linux in about the same amount of time that it'd take to open the equivalent .html file in firefox. It loads in a flash, doesn't crash, and looks good. Adobe Reader is suck.

Portable, HELOOO
its the best thing EVAR
