Chipped beef is pretty tasty by itself.

You can make the poor man's shit on a shingle at home, I used to when I was in college. Just buy some chipped beef, heat a pan with maybe two+ tablespoons butter and when hot add chipped beef until you get some browning, you're really just trying to add some beef flavor to the pan/butter. Take meat out and make a rogue by adding enough flour to the pan and cook the rough till blonde. Then add cream to make a gravy (you'll need some salt and pepper as well, you can add garlic and onion powder as well). Put beef back in pan to mix then server over toast.

I don't like it. I want to like it because it's an American classic, but I just don't dig white sauces.

That totally kills my appetite. Ugh.
Yeah, I don't like berries and leaves much either.

Heh, I really like that plate. I'm a freak for blackberries.

Yes. My dad fed us that when my mom was working weekends at the hospital.

edit: I should say it was a different type of SoS though, consisting of cream of chicken soup on white toast. Still good though.

That looks disgusting and incredibly delicious at the same time.

They don't call it shit on a shingle for nothing!

Haha, is that an actual term for the meal?!

You betcha...and when it's prepared right...it's GREAT!

I prefer ground beef to the chipped beef however.

My wife's version is ok...but it's still not as good as it was in the chow hall...:D

Wife and I call it "shit on a shingle".

Browned, ground beef. Mixed with Wondra gravy. Spread of toast.

Tasty.

It's usually pre-packaged stuff in the lunch meat section of grocers. It's kinda like a poor man's corned beef.

it's somewhat like Biscuits and Gravy, except for dinner.

This is pretty much how I describe it to people, too.

Dinner? Fuck that...it's a wonderful starch and carb filled breakfast too!

Shit on a shingle rules. I wish I knew what ingredients my mom used to use to make it, it's been years since I've had it. Ah, memories.

sometimes called "hamburger gravy" when ya don't have chipped beef, I like to add bacon bits to my SOS or B&G.
