My computer's in my bedroom and I always fall asleep to the hum of the fans.... whenever I do occasionally turn it off for whatever reason it's always strange not to hear it. So, brings up my question. Is your computer on 24/7? I have three computers (personal, file server, web server) and all are on all the time. Vote!

Yes.. It's basically been on 24/7 for the last 3 years.. of course there have been some downtimes, but nothing more than a few hours...

Nah, it's right by my bed and I can't stand the extra noise. It seems like it makes my room hotter, too.

everything he said, and i'm worried about the continuous stress on the components

Same here. When I go up north (Berkeley) I may leave it on to keep the room warm or something.

You walk in my room and you can definitely feel the temp difference than the rest of the house. I'm accustomed to the nouse though... blends in with the air conditioner.

I leave it on. It's very quiet. But when I turn it off and try to sleep, my ears ring unless the AC is on, I suppose because I'm so used to the sound.

4 running 24/7, only time I turn them off is when it gets too hot... but I normally have 3 fans running also, one pointed at bed, one pointed at desk chair, and another going back and forth for circulation.

Turn it on when I wake up. Turn it off when I sleep. It keeps me awake considering it's right next to my bed

if it weren't for electricity bills in california, and fear of hard drive failure from continuous use, i'd prefer to leave mine on

Yes.

Not having to pay for electricity, water, gas, etc means I consume a whole lot I otherwise wouldn't.. ;)

I think the worry about stressing the components is moot.

I know it's a fine line, but I think cooling/heating cycles are far more damaging to any electronic component than a constant power on state.

The only exception may be mechanical devices like HDDs, since they have a realitivly low MTBF.. at least compared to something like a CPU.

yes...though two 21" monitors running in a relatively small room SUCKS if you dont have a window constantly open that has some sort of exhaust or AC directed right toward the computers....those things throw so much freakin heat
