i cannot freestyle at all, never really learned how to get the breathing right so i do it with my whole face out of the water which doesn't work

you always can turn your head left to right. Or upwards....

high schools do a pretty good job of making sure everyone can swim these days....it is amazing to see how many kids in your swim classes who cant even stand up in the pool

I'm a competent swimmer, which means that I can hold my own in the water, but won't ever win any races. I learned later in life - 6th grade. All my friends could swim way before then.

when i was little my father tried to teach me by picking me up, carrying me into the water and letting me go. I promptly sank. that was the extent of my swim lessons.

I can swim pretty well, my wife too. Our daughter we started giving her swimming lessons at age 2 and now at 4 she swims like a fish. Funny thing is she can hardly float, so whenever she's in the water she has to swim all the time. We're trying to get her to learn to float better so she can go snorkeling with us, but she's been resisting our efforts so far, preferring to swim instead.

I don't know how to swim. I just sink. I think it has something to do with my bone density or something.

My middle school had a pool, and high school did too - the 'rents made me learn at like 3 or 4, and I took lots of swimming classes in school :)
