Do you have a Passcode on your iPhone?

Why/Why not?

I never have had Passcodes on my iPhones (or any mobile phone), mostly out of laziness, but I am starting to think I should.

What are your thoughts?

The passcodes annoy me. If I'm going to be away from my house all day, I'll usually set one just in case I lose the phone, but day to day.. it's passcode free.

Yes, I set mine to lock after an hour. That way if I'm actively using my phone, it's not annoying but it's locked after an hour. It's rarely annoying that infrequent.

Not on my iPhone. Too cumbersome and there's nothing on it that I don't want others seeing. I have a password on my iPad, mostly to keep my co-workers from messing with it while I'm out of the office. 😀

I don't use one but I never knew this was an option - I actually might, using this config. I am not one to lose phones, but mine has a lot of sensitive (not highly confidential, but sensitive) data on it. The passcode has always struck me as a nuisance, but if it only locked after an hour I could deal with it.

I use one, I work for a law firm and my work e mail and other work related information can be accessed from this phone. I'm not one to LOSE a phone either, but having it stolen would also result in the same situation of data security.

I am curious how you set it to only require one after an hour, though I think that seems long, I only see options of 1 minute, 5 minutes or 15 minutes in here. I use 5 minutes, and dont think i would use the hour option if it was there. 5 minutes is just so if I am sitting on the couch playing words or chess with friends or something similar, and i put the phone down and push the sleep button, if it dings in 2 minutes because they moved, i dont have to enter the passcode again, but in any scenario i can think of if the phone is lost or stolen, it will be protected.

If its set to an hour, and im checking my e mail at lunch at chipotle, and i leave it laying on the table by accident, thats a lot of time there where someone could grab it and start using it... i would imagine 5 minutes would be short enough to be sure its locked by the time i get back to it, or someone else picks it up.

I have mine set, and set with the 'Erase after 10 wrong attempts'.

Glad I had it on my iPad when it was stolen in Orlando last month. Knowing that they can try, but if they get it wrong, it wipes the whole thing and resets it is comforting.

HOLY SHIT YOU CAN DO THAT? AWESOME!

You almost had me second guessing myself. It's under Settings -> General -> Passcode lock. Under this menu you have Require Passcode (Immediately | After 1 Minute | After 5 Minutes | After 15 Minutes | After 1 Hour). I had it set to 1 hour, but I just reduced it to 15 minutes. If you don't have a 1 hour setting, perhaps it's because you have a different iOS version. I'm still at 4.3.1.

As I said earlier though, when it's set at 1 hour, I hardly ever notice I have a passcode. The shorter the lock requirement, obviously the more secure it is, but it's way more annoying. That's why I think 15 minutes is probably a good compromise.

I use a passcode on mine and have it set to wipe my data after 10 failed attempts.

The swipe pattern on Android is the one thing I miss from my Droid Incredible.

Wow, weird. I know where it is, thats where I was referring to. I have 4.3.1 (8G4) and i do not have an hour. 15 minutes is the last in the list.

I have a toddler who sometimes snatches my phone no matter how much I try and prevent this from happening. Passcode is a must.

My max is 15 minutes also. I think it has something to do with setting an email account using Exchange. The security settings set by Exchange might override the default lock times. So for those who sync to work email, it's probably to be in alignment with work security policies.

Huh. I use Exchange and I have 1-hour and 4-hour passcode options.

Length of time available is actually more about which version of the iOS you are running if there is a difference. On my iphone 4, it goes up to 4 hours. I don't recall it being that long on my 3G, but I can check. (note: 3G iphones can't run the latest updates to the iOS, so there could be a difference I guess)

So, on 4.3.3, yes up to 4 hours before requiring a lock.

Huh. I use Exchange and I have 1-hour and 4-hour passcode options.

It depends on the Exchange server settings. If the administrator wants the device to require a passcode within 1 hr, then the 1-hr and 4-hr settings will not be available on the iPhone.

It might be dependent on iOS version, but on my iPhone 4, if I setup my work Exchange account, I lose the 1- and 4-hour settings. If I setup Exchange using Google, I still have the 1- and 4-hr settings.

I guess you have failed to see that there are two different places to set the password time. Auto Lock only gives you 1 to 5 minutes.
When you go into Passcode Lock the options go from immediately to 5 hours.....

BTW, I don't use a passcode for day to day use but only when I go travelling to the cities.....
