*POLL*Do You have a fireplace ?

Right now we got a big wood buring fireplace thats probably 20 yrs old and real ugly. And i was at home depot and some some nicer ones (probably way more efficient) and thinking about getting one. just curious if most people have a wood burner and if they use it.

My main reason for wanting another one is that in this one we need to have a huge fire to heat up the outside of it enough and than it roasts the house up nice. right now its -1 outside and 81 degrees warmer in the house. the ones I saw at home depot looked way smaller and said they'd heat a 2200 sqft house(mines 1700 and we only heat the upper lv(850sqft)

Here (dorm) no. But back at home we had a wood burning fireplace. We just stopped using it about 10 years ago because it was such a pain to keep clean.

gas

I wanted a wood at first, but now that I've had the luxury of gas I'd NEVER go back to wood. With this you can flick it off and on in seconds and never hassel with wood or starting a fire. Sure wood fires are nicer once they're going, but this is like taking a car over a horse. The horse may have a little more spirit, but what a pain in the ass to take care of.

We have a wood-burning one, but haven't used it since we moved in. Heard it's really useless except for looks anyway. :| Any truth to that ?

My parents had a big wood stove, but they never used it because it was a pain to maintain. That sucker also put out an insane amount of heat when it was running, and would heat up the ground floor up to 85 degrees whenever it was running!

They eventually decided to replace it with a smaller and nicer looking gas stove, which they leave running all winter long.

I wanted pellet, but planning on selling the house in a year and would rather not spend a grand on a fireplace.. I live in a forrest and did some selective clearing so have lots of wood sitting around, and it sure helps keep the gas bill down when it gets sub zero.

we have a wood burning fireplace and a woodstove in our living room. We rarely use the fireplace, as the woodstove does a more than adequate job at keeping that room, and most of the rest of the house warm.

yea, but ours burns alcohol cans........ meaning it doesn't actually give off any heat, it's only for looks.

In terms of heating a house yes it is fairly useless. If you want to heat a house a stove works 10x better than a fireplace.

If you want usefullness, why have a fireplace in the first place, when you can have central heating or a space heater?
