I almost always try to, especially my closer friends. Are you cheap or do you care about your friends?

I'm cheap and my computers receive a major chunk of my funds so usually I don't.

Used to, now that we've got kids we stopped. We buy each others kids gifts though.

I am in college and have lots of friends, so it is a bit hard and unfeasible. I will pay for their dinner if we are out to eat at a restaurant though, so I guess that is a gift. I do buy my GF presents.

The reason I ask is because I'm the only one who gets my friends gifts at their parties. Like right now I'm trying to by a Dolby Digital shirt for my one buddy whereas no one got him anything.

I buy them dinner and all the drinks they want. It is usually split between the other people who are out that night so its not that much.

Is it normal for Americans to be that cheap?
The Dutch are known for being cheap, but even we aren't that cheap.

Not usually. I don't even know when my friends birthdays are. I can barely remember my imeadiate family birthdays.

Why would I get my friend's birthday presents? After all, they're his presents...

hmmm Always basically, here it is custom - the close friends usually pool up and get something together. typically no more then $10 per person

Female friends yes. Guy friends no. What we do is that we just give eachother money. At the end of the year it all evens out though, so it's basically like not giving a present at all. :p

We got the reputation because we used to be one of the most important trading countries in the world (looooong ago ;) ), and always tried to get a bargain.
Now that I think of it, the word 'bargain' may actually originate from 'bargoens', the mix of the Dutch language and that of some of the colonies.

Most Dutch aren't that bad nowadays (although there are terrible exceptions), but there still are points in which (some of) the Dutch are indeed thrifty. In some families you'll still only get one cookie with coffee, as that used to be a habit long ago.

I am a male, and I think buying other male friends presents would be borderline GAY.

Giving a guy books/CDs/DVDs or a subscription to Playboy is indeed a clear sign of homosexuality!

Just admit you are a cheapskate.
