Yeah, I chuckle everytime I think about it...

I was just curious if any of the youngsters around here actually understood it and/or thought it was even funny....as I suspected, they don't.

I just need to BUY Animal Crackers....and Duck Soup......and Horse Feathers....et al. 😉

The thing that makes all that funny though is the sheer genius of it. Not saying that it's the funniest thing ever, but puns can be difficult to put together like that. That's what made the Marx Bros famous. They were thinking this stuff up left and right and were able to keep the puns flowing.
 
I get it, but I think it's kind of contrived for a joke and never found it that funny.

On the other hand, I've always liked these Groucho lines:

"Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes?"
"Why don't you go home to your wife? I'll tell you what, I'LL go home to your wife, and outside of the improvement, she'll never know the difference."

good question. while i would say that the context of the times has a good deal of influence on humor, the real influence is just the context of the individual and therefore my statement really has no legs to stand on. oh well.

btw, i loved a night at the opera. i just don't like plays on words so much.
