i find that happening a lot at social events, where u just meet someone, shake hands, introduce yourselves, and not 2 mins later, forget their names.

it becomes kind of awkward and embarassing afterwards, when they remember your name and you forget theirs.
and you don't want to call his/her name incorrectly and you don't want to ask again becuz thats just rude/embarassing for both parties.
then depending on how long you'll be hanging around that person or how important they are, you hope someone will come along and call their name out loud and this time u make an effort to remember and lodge their name in ur brain somewhere.

or is that just me.

i find it happens a lot at events where i meet a lot of people and when i meet them as a group.

supposedly a tip to help remember their names is to use them right when you meet them.

that always happens to me. Especially when it is VERY IMPORTANT (i.e. job interviews, meeting friend's new GF, ect)

I don't even pay attention to their introduction unless it is someone I want to remember or will benefit from knowing.

My ability to remember their name is directly proportional to how good looking the person is. Being that I'm not gay, if you're a guy, I've already forgotten your name .5 seconds after you told me it.

A tip tho' to remembering a person's name is to immediately start mentioning their name in conversation with them.

"Hi I'm Rishi."

"Hi I'm Theresa."

"Hi Theresa, nice shoes..."

That's what I was told when I brought this up with a friend of mine. When others introduce themselves you would say, "Hi (name), nice to meet you I'm (name)." or along those lines. Then use it as often as you can in the short conversation you would have with that person. I'm really forgetful with names and that has helped me a lot.

I have never met anyone under the age of 80 named Theresa. Interesting line to use.

I can't remember sh!t. Usually a name is forgotten three seconds after it leaves their lips. LOL. Ok, maybe slightly longer.

I too cannot remember names. I'll work with someone 8 hours a day for a week and still not be able to remember their names. It is a big problem for me.

I'm HORRIBLE with names, especially in meetings. Somebody will introduce themselves and the name goes in one ear and out the other. At least the cheesy practice of swapping business cards bails me out most of the time. I position my cards on the table in front of me in relation to how those people are sitting so I can know who's who.

I can't remember most names to save my life. Guys' names are automatically forgotten. Ugly girls' names are automatically forgotten. I almost always remember a hot girl's name though. Funny how that works.

Help me remember names!
No it's not just you. EVERYONE forgets names. Sometimes I'll need to learn 8 or 10 new band member names , just for one evening. The rentention is relative to their "listing" in our brains "temp file."
Here's a couple of tricks that work for me.
#1. Use their name immediately after learning it at least 3 times before parting.
#2. If their name is the same as another one of your friends, try to find something to connect the two, looks, demeanor, some quirky thing.
#3. Write it down. Usually by writing it down, I will retain it far longer than any other method.

Finally, if you forget, just say" I'm sorry, I know You just told me, but your name has slipped my mind" Usually you will find they will say the same thing.
Don't sweat it. By admitting you need a reminder, you will show that you WANT to remember and even a boss can't find fault with that.

freshman year in college i met some guy playing bball at the gym. he told me his name, i promptly forgot it. for 4 years, whenever i saw him in the gym, he'd greet me by my name, but i never remembered his. after a while, i couldnt really ask.. i mean, how bad would it look to ask his name again a year after meeting him?

I don't think anyone is good at remembering names of people they have no use for, or for people they may not ever talk to again... It would just be wasted energy to remember all those names.
