I use mine in class, but I take graphic design classes and all we do is work on them. In the regular classes that I don't need a computer for I would never bring one, and I've only seen a handful of students who ever have. I can't see how it could be helpful, just a distraction.

I don't have a laptop, but I always find it distracting when someone brings one to class and sits in front of me (I generally sit near the front). I usually only see one or two laptop users in a large lecture (200 people+). If I had one, I might bring it to class with me, but I'd sit near the back with it.

I do, but only if the class is useless, I use the laptop to surf the intarweb and talk on AIM.

I would if I had a laptop!

I find taking notes to be pretty useful, but I'm taking nothing but Physics courses so it would just bog me down currently. For non-mathematics based courses it would be very useful. I type at 120WPM on a bad day. We had computers for my Intro to C course, and that made note taking very nice.

Only once.

I can type like 20x faster than I can write, and I can't write legibly at all. I used it in psych class and it worked well.

Of course I'm a math major, so it's pretty useless now that my core humanities are gone. Bye bye well rounded education!

i wouldn't even if i had one. too bulky to carry around. minimal gains in note-taking, but vastly superior to pass the time in lectures...

I only take it with me to Programming lectures, where the instructor that I have is a grade A A-hole, he has slides all over the place and doesn't bother posting them on his website BASTARD!!!

some of you bring up a good question...

does your clicking and typing noise in class distract other people and piss them off? see added poll.

The typing and clicking doesn't bother me. It's the douche infront of me that's playing a game that does.

What used to distract me most (when I was still in college) were the people who'd sit in the front of the class and websurf/play games/aim/etc. It was extremely difficult to mind my own business and focus on the lecture. It also felt a little disrespectful to the prof - it's fairly obvious what these students were doing.

that wouldn't bother me as much as the clicking and typing noise.

but if it's a big enough lecture auditorium and they sit in the back, then I could care less...

I'm asking all these questions because a co-worker wants to get her daugher a laptop for class and I told her they she probably wouldn't benefit from it. So I'm trying to see how many students actually take a laptop to class. And from the poll, it seems like 50/50, which shocks me, I didn't know there are that many students with laptops now a days....spoiled kids :p

What's really annoying is the people who don't make any attempt to be quiet and do IM and flash games (which often require lots of clicking).

I try to be quiet by using my touchpad (which can also double click) and quietly typing on the kb, it can be done :)
