I don't get it. Nearly everyone I know, teenagers to adults, always forgets the .009 to every gallon. I guess they display the first two digits following the decimal and tack the tiny 9 on there to make people think its cheaper or something. Sort of like places do the whole $1.97 thing instead of $1.99.

But when people talk about the gas prices around town they never round up. Now its negligible either way but I'm not sure if they just haven't ever looked at it or the receipt and read "price per gallon: 3.159".

So I try to always say the rounded up value, but if you're comparing gas prices I often get stuck saying the other way cause everyone else does. I'll say "yeah it was 3.16 at Holiday" but they'll say "I seen 3.15 on my way past there just a bit ago". I say something like "Oh yeah, that's what it was". I ain't gonna argue over it, heh. /rant

I never add it, simply because it's less mind-boggling. I don't think most people realize it's even there, and I don't think about it most of the time. If the sign says "$2.99" and I say gas costs $3, people will go "huh?", and this is corraborated by your post.

Doh. Good catch. Maybe I'm too chinese...

Anyway, to tack on - it's too hard for the general public to realize that every time they see the big numbers on the gas prices, they need to add 1 cent to it. Maybe everyone forgets, or the majority of people don't realize the extra cent and the minority was dragged down.

Eh, never been to Europe. How the hell am I to know? But at least you guys got it right over there.

Why would you not round up??

edit: It's definitely not a big difference, no doubt.

But, $3.159 is NOT 3 dollars and fifteen cents. Sure mathematically its not $3.16 either but since a penny is the smallest denomination, you're paying 3 dollars and sixteen cents per gallon.

$3.15 is a downright LIE! ;)

I don't bother, though I've been well aware of the 9/10 since I was at an age when reading road signs was entertaining. Fvck, I don't even bother looking at which place is cheaper anymore. Either way I'm filling up and paying out the ass... I just do it where ever it's the most convenient. I probably pay an extra 1c per gallon more than I'd have to. But I don't drive nearly as much as most people (in 4 years I've put less than 19k miles on my car), and my car gets good milage, so it doesn't really hurt me... even in the long run.

No. Hell, for years I thought that it meant $x.xx for 9/10 of a gallon.

Yes...I work in a gas station...if a customer wants an exact 2 gallons worth of gas. Might as well make it exactly 2
