I don't think someone who gets sprayed in the face with mace has a snowballs chance in hell of doing anything life threatening to me with a knife. I've been in fights before, I know how to defend myself, and I would not idly stand by a be a victim in that situation.

And, like all things in life, it would depend on a lot of factors. I wouldn't take my chances in a really bad neighborhood (not that I drive around in really bad neighborhoods anyway), and I probbably would weigh my chances more carefully if I was far away from a hospital. If I got carjacked in my day to day routine, I most likely wouldn't hand the car over as there are just too many other options, including just driving away. Who carjacks a car during a traffic jam?

Not to mention guys don't get carjacked that often. Its something that usually happens to women.

I don't lock my doors just because I'm not paranoid, but there's not really any reason not to. I don't lock them when I see homeless people, like some folks do. That's insulting to them.

Some how, from those simple calculation, it's safe to say that you didn't do much thinking.

gun > locked or unlocked door.

What are they gonna do? Shoot the window? Yeah I'm sure carjackers really want to steal cars with shot out windows... You know what, gun > house door locks, so stop locking your house door.

I live in a college town with a lot of drunks and freaks. The other night at a redlight, I saw someone just run up and molest the driver side (windows up) of the car in front of me. Considering I usually drive with my windows down (mustang, only 2), this kind of thing would really scare the sh!t out of me...

About 6 weeks ago, I made the decision to keep a 4 inch, half serated switch blade in my visor so I can slash someone within 18 inches of my open window across the waist or turn it and reverse knife someone in my passenger seat in the chest. Only reached for it twice, never had to use it. I would rather be dead than surrender control of my situation to anyone who isn't worthy (read: me or justified law enforcement officer)

I would think that locking your door would give you added seconds incase someone does decide to run up and try to jack you... in the time they pull the handle and scream for you to get out of the car you can slam on that gas and get the hell out of there.

The doors on my Vandura require a HUGE amount of force to close properly, which most people are not capable of providing because they've never slammed a car door. When they aren't closed properly, they rattle. Large bumps have actually sent them flying open before. That's just unnerving. They get locked. The ones in the turbovan aren't power locks, so no, they don't.

Yes, I always lock my doors. My new car alarm does it for me now, but even if it didn't, I would still lock my doors. I got in the habit when I took driver's ed and I've always kept my doors locked ever since.

Locking your doors helps people out, and helps keep you inside the car in the event of an accident.

EDIT: My alarm locks the doors when I turn the car on (unless the dome light is on) and unlocks the doors when I turn it off. It is a really great feature.

The most someone is gonna do with a knife is wave it around wildly after getting sprayed with mace. Thats when I go for the tire iron.

Assuming you hit the guy with enough in the eyes to blind him effectively, and you didn't get shanked when you reached for the mace and he already had his knife out.

that is what they taught us in drivers ed back in 1982, back before car jacking was heard of. i always lock all the doors for safety

God damn, I hate driving people like you around. THey just love slamming my doors since they close so easily. They try to remember but sometimes they just forget. Oh well...

Anyay, I uusally lock. I forget sometimes though.

I've never locked my doors while driving, and no one I know has done that except with small children in the car. No one I have ever known has been assaulted while driving. I see no benefit to locking the doors.
