Poll: Do u have a laser printer at home ?

Hi, fellow members

Thinking of buying a SOHO class laser.

Wonder what brand/model u guys use ?

My major concern is reliability and consumable (toner) price.

I know some toner used to have holes and can be refill easily without tools.

I have 5 major brands/model to consider

1. Xerox Phaser 3115 (OEM by samsung)
2. HP Laserjet 1010
3. Brother HL-1440/1430
4. Samsung ML-1710
5. Canon LBP-2410

If u know any printer toner still have holes, LMK.

Anyway. The Phaser 6100 should be a pretty good buy if you wanna do color printing.

A couple, multifunction HP 3330 workhorse & a LaserJet 1000.

Have both slaved to PC's got the 1000 & hooked it up to mine because I got tired of making sure the wife's PC/slave printer was on.

I really appreciate a reliable laser printer, my inkjets (insert any brand inkjet here) are tinkery & I hate that...

got a 1440 but i want to upgrade to something that does duplex

amazingly i have printed over 10K pages on the first toner cartridge

but my drum is pretty crappy now

drum life is not very long if that is a downside

if you don't replace the drum your prints will look light photocopies but if you don't care about that then it is fine

Now I've got a Brother MFC 5100C all-in-one for my wife and My personal printer is (and always will be) an Epson inkjet. At the moment it's a C64.

got the samsung 1710. had it for ~2 years, no problems. Came with 2 toners, killed the first one still using the second.

I have a very cheap hp laserjet 6se or 5l or something like that. It has lasted 6-7 years and several moves, 30 tons of dust, and still runs.

Before that I had an hp deskjet which failed all the time, needed new ink cartridges way too often, and just in general was a piece of crap.

I got a Minolta 1250W, cheapie from officemax or staples or whatever office store that had coupons that day. It was under $100. One year later, it still works great. Just don't expect it to be heavy duty and the toner costs a fortune.

I have a HP LaserJet 1200. Great printer, great performance, my only complaint is the paper holder is flimsy (but it hasn't ever caused a problem). I also have an Epson 1100 that I don't use anymore (it has only 1 MB memory which is about 1/4th what is needed).

Toner price shouldn't be much of an issue. Most laser printers cost 2 cents to print a typical page. Compare that to 10 cents for an inkjet ($1 for full color inkjet prints). Thus with virtually any laser printer, you'll be much better off in consumables price. Most people I know with laser printers have never even changed their toner (as one toner can print many thousands of pages). There are a few execeptions of very low end laser printers which are up to 4-6 cents per page for toner, but still those are much better consumable prices than most inkjets.

My experience with refillable cartridges at work is not very good. They tend to streak on the paper as the toner can leak out. We've even tried the refirbished toner cartridges and they last maybe 30% as long as the real toner cartridge while not saving much money.

Instead I recommend just slowly saving up the ~$60 over the next few years, so you can buy a full toner cartridge when you need it.

HP Laserjet 1012, have had it since right after christmas last year. My Canon inkjet has been pretty much collecting dust since then Only used for when I need to print color.

Don't laugh, but I currently use an Okidata 10e, pulled from the computer graveyard at my University. I pulled like four or five of them out of there so I can re-use parts -- they used to be library printers thus had taken a beating before I got them.

My wife is a teacher at a school with mostly useless copiers, so we print many thousands of pages per year. The printer has had numerous toner changes, and the toner is CHEAP. However, the drum is pricey (I need to rip out a drum from one of the others, thanks for the reminder!). What Okidata did was make the toner cartridge as flimsy as possible -- it looks like some of the components were moved to the drum. Works for me -- $33 for 3000 pages, IIRC.

Aside: technically it's a "digital LED" printer, not a laser.

We used to have an HP 5L which died after less than a month of my wife being a teacher. The paper feeder was a POS. Freaking HP gave free replacement parts for the 6L having the same problem but not the 5L, grrr! Anyhow, we moved on to a NEC SuperScrip 870, but the expensive drum went bad after a couple of years, so we started using the library printer above rather than lay out the dough for a new drum, and to profit from the cheaper toner.

Got a Brother MFC-8300 laser/fax/etc. machine. Main problem with it is that it doesn't have enough memory to print a full page with graphics and the proprietary memory expansion kit would cost about as much as a new laser/fax/etc. machine.

I've also got a Minolta/QMS Magicolor 2300W. It's noisy and slow for color printing and it looks like it'll cost me more to replace the toner cartridges than I paid for the printer.

Both have their drawbacks, but they do work and I get a lot of use out of them, especially the Brother, which has stood up to lots of heavy printing for years. Generic toner cartridges for the Brother aren't too bad price-wise, either.
