As we get older and face situations that our parents faced in the past, we are likely to show traits and responses similar to what the people who raised us demonstrated to us as children. There are times when I know that I am 'becoming my mother' or acting like my father. There are also times when faced with situations that I witnessed my parents face, that I purposely make a different decision or respond to it in different ways based on how I saw that situation play out. For instance, when I take my kids to the park and see another kid doing something dangerous or mean, I will 'become my mother' and step up and tell the child to knock it off (even though I tend to be non-confrontational most of the time.) But when somebody at a restaurant says something irritating to me, instead of bitching him/her out like my mother would have, I just roll my eyes and imagine the huge stink my mother would make if she was there.

I married a girl. Her mom got a divorce from her dad a couple years later. My wife was quite upset and pissed at her mom and didn't think she could ever forgive her for leaving her dad. Then a couple years later she divorces me and takes our daughter. Go figure. It's not ok for her mom to split up the family but shecan.

Daughters tend to want to scream "I AM NOT LIKE MY MOTHER!!!" and they try to create very different personas.

And then, in spite of all their efforts, one day they catch themselves in the middle of doing or saying something, and go "oh sh!t ! I'm turning into my mother!" :p

Thats OK, as long as they realize they are doing it and dont like it.
Its the times they deny such things or just dont care, thats when you got to worry.

Not always.

VeggieFrog is almost nothing like me.

she is polite, shy and really well behaved. She doesnt smoke, doesnt drink, never tried drugs...

In fact, the only thing we really have in common is that we are both strong, capable women.

it all depends... if they're closer to the dad, than they might be just like their dads later...

In the end, hopefully we embrace our mother's most positive traits and develop healthier ones to replace the dysfunctional.

It certain isn't as simple as cloning. :p

This one gets my vote too.

Ding Ding.

I am my father's son. I am not my father. My wife is not her mother, she IS her daughter.
