POLL: Do beards / facial hair leave bad first impressions for interviews?

I have an interview on Weds and am torn between whether or not I should shave my beard. I have a mustache as well, but plan on leaving it. I would rather not shave but will if it would lead to landing a job opportunity. I keep it clean cut and short, not a santa clause or ZZ top style. My fiancee loves my facial hair as I look my actual age and I know she will throw a tantrum/pout for a while if I do shave it. Without it I look about 15-16, and I am 23. So I also dont want to go into an interview looking 16, but with a clean cut mustache I figure that I would still look semi-older. BTW: I am getting married in 6 weeks, not long enough for it to grow back, fully.

What do you think?

EDIT: The job is an "on call" network administrator with Sprint/Alamosa PCS

If you showed up to an interview with a ZZ Top-style beard, that would be bad ass..

You would need the shades and fur-covered guitar too..

If you did that, I would hire you.

But I am probably in the minority.

Depends if it's that pubic hair looking facial hair or actual facial hair. I'd shave it to be on the safe side

I agree, just shave it to be safe. You can always grow it back if you get the job.

pic added,

it took almost 2-3 months to get it to this point, nice and full.

EDIT: I trim it almost everyday though to keep it short.

That is not a beard - shave the scraggly hairs off, you don't need them, they make you look bummish. If you like the 16 year old computer geek who thinks his facial hair(s) are cool, then do it.

Never had a problem with mine, but I think I look MUCH better with one than without. It works with my face shape for some reason (I have a funny shaped head :p)

From what I see in that pic you wouldn't stand a chance with me as the interviewer. I suggest you shave all the facial hair and if that is long hair I see.....go to the barber first thing in the morning. Nothing is more unprofessional than a scraggly appearance.....I don't even classify that as facial hair so it is actually worse than a real beard, which would nix your chances with me anyway.

That is my fiancee's hair. Not mine. Like my body is deformed enough to have long blonde hair on one side and an ear 3" lower than the other :).

I have short hair, like 2-3" worth. Just enough to comb it.

Wow, and I though I grew facial hair slowly.

No offence, but were that a real beard, I would say "keep it". But that thing.....its not a beard, its not a proper mustache....just shave it.

if it is well trimmed, i don't see the problem.

edit: looked at the pic. i'd shave it man, it's not thick enough to be a real beard anyway.

I had a boss who put it best... facial hair will offend a certain percentage of the population whereas a clean shaved face won't. Why risk offending anyone? (this was when I worked in sales)

And I looked at the pic. I am not trying to be mean but that moustache and fuzz under your chin look weak. I think you should shave all of it off.

Good luck, I hope you get the job!

Seconded
In general, I think it takes a certain type of guy/look to pull off a beard as a first impression, and it's easier as you get older. If you think you got it, go for it. My advice would be no.

Do you know anybody there? Does the boss have a beard?

If it was a bit more substantial than what is shown in the pic, you might be able to pull it off, but I will be honest - that moustache really does make you look like a 16 year old mexican-heritage high schooler rather than a 23 year old network admin.

Shave it - theres not enough time to grow it fuller.
