I have neither and haven't done any research into either recently, but I would probably get Directv because I could bundle it with my Qwest service.

I have cable ATM, and for what I get, its a lot better deal than dish is, and I dont have to have a contract or shit like that, plus on demand is great!

if I had to choose, Direct TV cause their menu/guide system seems a little better to me, I hate having to look through the Dish guide at friends houses...

we just switched from dish 'standard' to directv 'hd'
costco had a special deal where we bought a 32" LCD tv and with switching to directv we'll get a $50 and a $200 costco gift card

Dish has been pretty good for me.
I was happy they decided that the LAN port on it would be good for something, as I don't have a land line. Last summer they pushed out a software upgrade that let me put it on the network and stop paying the $5/month fee for not having it plugged into the phone.

It may be specific to certain receivers, I have a 622. I'm still not sure if I have to pay to activate the external USB drive capability or not, my friend's 722 does it out of the box but last I heard they wanted $40 out of me for it.

the installer guy told me i can hook up the directv HD DVR to my LAN and it'll download PPV movies across the internet and store them on the disk for viewing anytime

What crazy things are you being charged for?

They wanted you to plug your received into the phone for something?

Dish for me
Both the 622 and 722 have ethernet.
I got the 722.
It really is a nice receiver .
Two tv support with one box.
The box has a coax connection for the second tv so you can distribute it to all the sets in your home easily.
It also comes with an IR remote and a UHF remote that only controls the second tv, so you can change the channel etc independent of the main tv anywhere in the home.
Works great for running tv to your pc in another room.

Its like having two seperate DVR but in one box.

Dish has a $5/month charge if you don't have at least one of your recievers plugged into a telephone line

it sounds like they had a firmware upgrade to make it IP capable (internet) to do the communications, but they never told me , they just kept collecting the $5/month

Yeah, $5 monthly fee if you didn't have the receiver plugged into a phone line. Ostensibly so they can make sure you're not cloning your receiver (or something else I don't know how to do), but I'm pretty sure that's just an excuse to charge you for the equivalent of 1 PPV per month.

IIRC I went to my DVR menu, and there was a video it had automatically put on there explaining the setup and everything.

They recommend connecting a phone line for any receiver, but they enforce this fee only on dual-tuner receivers or accounts with multiple receivers.

The new ViP series receivers are the ones which now support broadband as an alternative to the phone line. Again, not an issue unless you've got a dual-tuner receiver or several receivers on the account.

They don't know you don't have it connected.

When they've been to my place to hook up a new receiver I just tell them there's a phone cord down in that mess of wires somewhere, but I never need pay-per-view so don't plug it in.

Dish doesn't know any different.

Just try and call and tell them you have it connected and see what they say.

I don't even have a land line, just a cell :p

Once Dish or Fios gets every major channel in HD, then I'll start shopping around to find a cheaper price. Until then, they'll have to pry this Directv remote from my cold dead hands.
