I have Dish, but am switching over to a DTV TIVO setup this week. Just scored a 160gb HD to hack it with for ~$30 after rebate:D

For my purposes, they're so similar, it really doesn't make a difference, just the equipment & price point.

The only thing I'd suggest is to nt get the cheapest IRD they sell of either brand.

Which DTV Tivo box are you getting?

They do, it was only unavailable for a couple of days because of the Viacom ordeal.

If you want the NFL ticket go with Direct TV since Dish network doesn't carry it (at least last year). Other than that, they both offer pretty much the same packages.

This is getting to be like intel v. amd

DTV =sports
Dish=Movies

Thats the general guideline but I believe DTV has plenty of movies. Its what I have and what I would vote for.

DirecTIVO (DirecTV receiver with built in TIVO) is the best way to go, also DirecTV has better programming choices IMHO.

Currently DirecTV is offering

Up to 5 rooms for free with free installation (after rebate)
FREE DVD Player (after rebate)
Total Choice with Local Channels for just $30 per month for the first 6 months ($40/mo after that)

I think Dish has a better selection of International channels but I could be wrong about that.

Actually, I just got my DirecTV bill yesterday and total choice plus w/ locals is $42.99 a month. I assume $40 is without "plus"? But, I will give DTV credit as they're charging us $40 as that's the price the programming was when we started a new 12 month contract, for the duration of the contract (in January when we bought the TIVO).

NutBucket - There are most likely fees, taxes, surcharges, etc. that they add on.

Just moved into this house about 3 weeks ago. No Cable so we signed up for DirecTV.

The guy came to install today and couldn't find a clear line of site. So we didn't get DirecTV.

The previous people that lived here had Dish Network with no problems (its a rent house, pervious Dish Network wiring is still here), so we called and they are coming out Tuesday to install the dish, etc...

They said since it was already installed here before that there should be no problem installing and getting a line of site. The lady also said that tons of people had called Dish Network with the same problem from DirecTV. I don't know if she was just trying to be nice or what on that.

Hopefully Dish Network will work next Tuesday, or we will just be stuck here with NBC, FOX, and fuzzy UPN for the next year while we are at the rent house. At least the DSL is up and running.

This is only my experience so it could be just that I got a bad install done.. SO do more research... But my directV would constantly get dropped during rain showers and storms.. CONSTANTLY.. It was rather annoying and I called a tech over twice to get my dish realigned - they never could fix it and ended up telling me that it's just the way the technology works..... Dishnetwork has been drop free even during the big storms we had this fall... Dishnetwork also has international channels (they installed two dishes on my roof) and the dish PVR isn't THAT bad (ok, tivo is MUCH better)... Dishnetwork also seems to be a bit cheaper...

Yeah, line of sight is a big deal, if you can't get signals it doesn't matter if they have the best packages.

You can pretty much watch most of the NFL games if you have all the locals with Dish, but only if you live in Cananda.
