Poll: Did you switch to WinME, then switch back to Win98 (or another OS)?

I'm thinking of installing WinME, and I've heard a few bad things...just trying to get a feel for how acutal users think it is

Yup...winme was terrible for me and my friends...using win98se and win2k dual boot....i think its the best combo for any home user. 🙂

Yes, I switched back to 98se from ME on my "B" system (running 2k on my main).

Reasons? I'll sum it up quickly, otherwise I'd go on a rant. From a clean install I'd have constant crashes. I don't have any exotic peripherals or resource hogging programs running in the backround. A simple shut-down or re-boot resulted in a BSOD 85 percent of the time...I could go on but I've got to go to work. One more thing, Don't do ME!

Agreed. I too switched back to win98/win2k dual boot from ME. My problem was with the cdrw (Sony cdrx 140E). Seemed like winME couldn't deliver enough data for 8xwriting, hence the switch back to 98. Of course, win2kpro has the same problem, and that's the only reason I still have 98 installed. Every gajme I've tried since wroks fine under win2kpro.

I'm about to switch back...for all the reason and more that Lowfat and Y2KC have said...I've had nothing but window protection errors and BSOD's since I installed WinME and right now I can't even get my computer to stay on long enough to troubleshoot. I wish I could get my $$ back. Ooh and one more thing..I can't get my athlon over the default settings now..I used to have this thing overclocked upto 950 now I can only get it to run at 750...

Switched back yesterday (to Win98)
After ME I was getting BSOD after being on for an hour or so.

With 98 this thing never crashes.

I have dual winME and 2k.

Its just as or more stable than 98 once u do a few things.
One, it got rid of Real DOS mode and thus any drivers that try to initiate a dos command will crash the system. Alot of people with soundblaster cards get this since it installs SB16 emulation (DOS drivers). Simply disable it and its fine.

Also disable system restore unless u want the c: drive to fill up quick.

ME also uses the TCP/IP stack from win2000 so some communication software may crash the system.

But in the end, i chose it for a few reasons, one all systems now ship with ME so eventually it will all be it anyway...might as well use it now...two, it has native support for the 815e chipset and i have an Asus CUSL2 so i figured what they hey...and three...I got a free copy 😛

Besides, i use win2k mostly anyway..i just use ME for games and thus the ocational crash doesnt mean much to me.

I've had no problems with ME. Upgraded from 98SE. It boots and shut down a lot faster. only problem is that it takes up a lot more diskspace for some reason

I've had not a single problem with WinME... I don't get it. Seems the sides are split on this OS. Some peopel have NO problems while all others have are problems.

I love WinME and would NEVER go back to Win98.

If your ME is crashing, check your hardware compatibility and drivers.
WinMe is suppose to be better and more stable than Win98Se.
All I can, if your system is not up to par, stick with the old stuff.
In addition, since WinME using the same TCP stack as win2k...
beware of all old crappy software.

Just like Win2k, it is very picky in hardware. But if you equipment
is on their HAL list, than Win2k will run 100% and hardly crash.

I got to agree with the most of u, I also think WinME sucks
it is slow, takes up double the space of win98se, much more BSOD ect..
switched back to WIN98SE
As they say where I come from in Belgium:
"Draait gelijk een lierke"

Will be switching back to 98SE this weekend......ME is fairly decent, but too many crashes/freezes, especially with internet apps and I'm convinced going back to 98SE is way to go for now, at least until MS releases service pack for ME....

Still running Winme, but that will change as soon as i get some spare time. Win98 wasnt perfect, but better the devil you know

I have had problems with ME as well, mainly the shutdown problems it has with fast drives but also just general flakiness. And the hidden DOS stuff just pisses me off. I think I will put a dual boot with 2k on my system and only run ME when absolutely (game requires it) necessary. Only thing is now I need more RAM (if you ask me, 2000 needs at least 256 MB, the 128 I have just won't cut it.)

I recently had the opportunity to play with ME, and my impressions weren't that favourable either. It seems much less stable than the original win98SE install it was replacing, so I reverted back to that on the box I installed ME on, and have only installed win98SE since.
