Everytime they refer to AOL/Warner they say something like

"AOL has released their new version 7.0, AOL/Warner is the owner of this network).

I've seen other stations do this, is it required by law or something?

I think it is. It's basically a disclaimer the network puts out to avoid any notion of a conflict of interest.

AOL owns a lot more than just CNN... they've got Warner Bros., all the Turner networks, the Atlanta Braves...
