It's been since Christmas when we all discussed the Segway and I'm wondering if anyone actually sees it around?

I am pretty sure it was stated that it was going to be released in limited numbers to government applications, such as mailmen... and that it wouldnt be for sale to the public for quite some time, and for sale at a decent price for even longer.

Thanx, that would explain it's lack of appearance in my area :)

I like the "I told you it was a POS" option. :) I've been saying that since they started the hype.

im actually more interested in what inventions/things arise from the idea behind segway rather than the actual scooter itself, which, imo, looks kinda fruity. I dont think mr policeman looks too imposing riding one of those things :)

So have I, and what MacBaine said makes me wonder why they had it shoved in our face in every media outlet 6 months ago if they were not ready to market it to the masses

From the official site:

"Segway? Human Transporter (HT) i and e Series models are available immediately for commercial industries and businesses. To be contacted by a Segway salesperson regarding quantities and pricing, simply fill out a business registration.

The p Series model for consumers is not yet available. In the meantime, consumers can register to receive newsletters, updated release information, and other news about Segway HT."

I would assume that since only the business (heavy duty) version is available, that you'd only see one in action at some big industrial site. Although I heard that some branch of the US Post Office intended to get a bunch.

Beware! Beware! I saw a gas station in Chicago (North & LaSalle) selling premium for $1.99. We can only expect to see prices go higher this summer. Suddenly a few thousand bucks for a machine that costs $0.05 per day to operate doesn't sound bad.

Seeing as they said it would be at LEAST a year before it would be commercially presented to consumers, I dont think anyone can say it has caught on. Unless you work at USPS or a media outlet, I dont think anyone is going to be riding one for a while.

How can any of you say it is a piece of sh!t? The technology is revolutionary... even if it is in a scooter right now. In 10 years, we will see this technology put to much better use, and it very well may have a tremendous impact on our methods of transportation.

I can only speak for myself when I say that I think the technology has great potential just as you do, but I think the present incarnation of the Segway is a POS. Hey it's just my opinion but I'll still take my human powered MTB over it.

Calling it a POS is like calling the first airplane a POS. It couldn't fly more than a few hundred feet... much less carry anything too heavy... it was, for all intents and purposes, worthless... but it was not a POS.

It's kind of goofy right now, but the technology that it uses may very well be put to good use sometime in the future.

I don't concur with that analogy as I don't believe it will have nearly as profound an impact on transportation as the airplane did. However only time will tell and either you or I will have our opinion venerated when it does. Until then I respectfully disagree with you :)

it very well may have a tremendous impact on our methods of transportation.

That may be, but my question is where willit be used. It moves about twice the speed of a pedestrian making using it on sidewalks dangerous. Peds would have to constantly watch for moving Segways when exiting, say, stores or just walking around....one would constantly be on the lookout for Segways closign quickly from behind before one stops to browse a store window, or talk with a friend on the sidewalk, or buy a hotdog from a vendor, etc.

It moves too slowly to be used on the street........anyone in half-decent shape on a bike can leave it behind. And a bike costs much less than .05 per day to operate.

I just don't see it as much a revolution in transportation that it's being presented......it may morph into something, but as it is, it needs some infrastructure to actually be useful in the urban setting.

The technology behind it is another proposition. That may definitely become something, but as it is now.......useful for industrial apps, but little else.

OK, why is USPS getting this thing for ? I hardly see it as cost effective, there are much cheaper options out there. No wonder they're raising rates all across the board next month. This kind of frivolous spending needs to stop.

What does Segway have to do with Steve Jobs?

I think that Jobs has a lot of money on the table backing dean kamon. Jobs is diffinitly a visionary in my opinion.
