Poll: Did college prepare you for your career choice?

Basically, if you went to college or tech school or whatever, did you leave feeling like you learned what you needed to know in order to get a job in the field of your choice?

I've been in my career field during my last two years of college and I can honestly say that what I learned in college pales in comparison to what I've learned on the job in a practical sense.

I was more than qualified when leaving college to gain a position in the field I chose, public accounting. Without that college degree I would not have a position and for that I feel that college adeqautely prepared me for my career. Of course I have learned 90% of what I do from on the job training.

Actually yes, I went to tech school for Die Making way back when and it was really just what you need to give you the basics.

I've since gotten a bachelors degree in Industrial Management. That one would probably have much less practical applications.

I think I've learned more from working directly in a hospital then I have in nearly 3 years of nursing school. However it may or may not be an exception since I work in a teaching hospital and I actively seek out new learning opportunities while making sure to network with our attending docs so they'll show me things I'd never learn/see/read about in nursing school. And also networking with the RN's so they'll allow me to practice things that again I usually wouldnt be able to otherwise.

I think it's helped tremendously and it sometimes makes me doubt my education and how much money I pay to get information shoved down my throat in a disorganized and hypocritical manner from my professors. However I have strong confidence that when I become an RN in 11 months I'll be more than prepared thanks more to my job than to my schooling.

Interesting replies. The reason I ask is because I went to an automotive school and found it difficult to get a job when I graduated... short of changing tires or oil, which ya don't need to go to school to do. Now I'm considering going back to school, but an IT school, and I'm worried that I'll end up in the same boat after that... only opportunities available to me being at Best Buy or Circuit City.

What I did in college had nothing to do with what I do now, but the thought processes I learned in college helped me out.

The nice thing about being in college is you can generally do internships, and that experience will help you get into the field and position you want.
