Take the poll!

I have a really old Microsoft Mouse that came with my '96 NEC 9716. I got tired of it conking out erratically("trigger" button fails to work) and picked up a Logitech Trackball. Ya know...the one with the thumb moving the trackball. I can't seem to click on anything useful with it. So I'm thinking...maybe I should get a Logitech optical mouse? That would be oh so tight. Then I could frag and actually hit something. I wouldn't have to clean the mouse ball...so...

Anyways. Keep the crappy mouse and trackball too(I use it when I'm not playing games), or stick the trackball with my NEC 9716, throw away the Microsoft mouse and get the $30.00 Optical mouse?

Thanks,
Paul

it depends on how u play too... i have a coworker that uses a trackball and kicks madd ass with it... but he uses it in a weird way... left mouse button for forward, right mouse for backward, wheel button for reload and changing weapons... A and D for strafing, S i think for firing... it's weird, but he totally kicks with this config... since you're using a trackball, i thought u might want to try it...

I play with a trackball. I'd prefer a mouse, but the computer I have with cable access has a trackball, so that's what I play CS on.

I use the Kensington Expert mouse, which even though "mouse" is in it's name, it'a a hella big trackball--the ball itself is Q-ball sized and made of ceramic. It's super precise and IMHO much more intuitive than using a mouse for the obvious reason not having any real estate restrictions at all--no need to "lift" and replace when close to the edge of the mousepad or desk.

Of course I also use a joystick for movement, binds, and weapons control too--much to the chagrin of many mousers--I dunno but the joystick is far more intuitive for movement than the keyboard--especially the "on" and "off" only nature of the keys wheras the joystick has proportional control depending upon how much you actually move the stick. Get a good joystick with enough buttons and you're all set. My joystick has a total of 17 buttons, including 8 on the dual hat switch.

Trackball in the left hand, joystick in the right, and you're all toast. ;)

I used an optical mouse for gaming for awhile but went back to a Microsoft wheelmouse standard "ball-bearing" mouse. The opticals are great, but they occasionally have tracking problems when moving very quickly which I found troublesome. I'm using a Ratpad so the dirt problem is minimized, and I don't mind cleaning inside it every so often.

I've only used a trackball and mouse and I prefer the trackball much more. I haven't used an optical mouse before so I don't know what they're like.

I've been playing CS with my Logitech Trackball for several months now and I'm pretty good with it. I find you can play well with just about any kind of mouse/trackball, you just have to get used to it.

I use a Logitech trackball and I am much better with it than I was with a mouse.

Trackball! Once I used one for several days I was hooked.

But my config is kind of different. Mouse2 (right button) is +forward, mouse1 is +attack, mouse3 is zoom/+attack2. Then I pack S=Sleft D=SRight F=back.

It's where it's at!

I just picked up a Logitech Optical Mouse. It's so weird. I'm used to picking up my mouse because when I move, I move huge distances. It's kinda frustrating. It stops working sometimes...ARGH!

well I use an optical mouse and I crank the sensitivity for my mouse WAY high, a single inch or two of movent will sweep my field of view 180 degrees, a tiny twitch of the wrist will whip my player around

fav move in Q3, someone is following me, shooting me with machine gun or something, I run forward, jump, turn around in midair, fire a rocket at their feet, land, continue running backwards firing rockets at their feet if they are still alive.

all done with less than an inch or two of movements of the mouse

I could never play with a trackball.

and whats bad too, there is a guy here at work that uses that "invert mouse" function in all FPS games, (we play UT and Q3 at work all day. :) ) so when you move the mouse down, the dude looks UP, its SO weird. but he says the first game he played he had that enabled, so it was just the way he always did things. plus he cranks the mouse sensitivity WAY down, its annoying, I try a wrist-twitch-spin and it just moves like 2 degrees. :( to turn around he has to move his mouse like across the whole desk then pick it up and move it back some more. :Q

Hey don't mess with the inverted mouse. That's the way real gamers do it ;). I don't know how I got started, I think it was cause of that game Zaxxon(spelling?) from way way back in the day. In that game if you pulled down, the spaceship went up, and vice versa. I loved that game and I've been hooked on the invert ever since

Edit: Oh yeah, I use a mouse. I got a janky trackball from cyberrebate a while ago and tried it, but just couldn't get used to it. I use a regular mouse now, but I'm waiting on my optical mouse to be shipped, hopefully that will work well.

Optical mouse. No exceptions.
Invert mouse is ok if your used to playing pilot games.
With the standard cockpit controls.
I have never had a problem with tracking and a optical mouse.
About to buy a surface 1030 as well. I like them just a bit better then the ratpadz.
