I was looking at these speakers for my new computer. I have a X-Gamer 5.1 sound card.

Boston Acoustics BA 4800 - $130
Midiland 7100 - $140
Logitech Xtrusio DSR 100 - $135
Altec Lansing ADA885 - $160

I think the Klipsch Promedia 4.1 is the best speaker set but its out of my range.
Please help me in making the right decision.
Thanks in advance.

I'd take the BA4800, even if you could afford the Klipsch, I'd still take the BA4800.

no way, the midiland 7100s are better than the BA4800s for the money...

the 7100 plus is going for under 200 as well - disgusting.

The midilands don't have near the quality the BA4800 do. They are more on a level with the DTT3500s.

I vote for the BA4800's. I've had my BA635's for almost 3 years now and they have all the bass I need, plus a clear, crisp sound :)

May I suggest the Yamaha MS50 speakers?? 2 20 watt satellites, and 1 40 watt sub. Check out the user reviews at www.epinions.com. Everyone seems to like them, and they are only $95 plus shipping on Amazon. I just orderd mine today and applied a $15 off coupon to cover shipping (can be found at t#chb#rg##ns.com) so my total was only $97 shipped.

noriaki, the midiland 7100 (plus) comparable to the DTT3500?...laughable...

i've heard both setups in 5.1 and downmixed 4.1 and the dtt3500s don't sound anywhere near the 7100s (they were the plus)...
i've also heard a set of the ba4800 in futureshop - admittedly briefly, but nonetheless, i didn't think they were any better than the 7100s for roughly the same price while lacking a decoder, remote and center channel...

I've never personally used the 7100Plus system, but the guys at 3dss.com said they found the overall sat quality to be behind the DTT3500s.

They unfortunately do not compare directly to the 4800s, but rather the BA7500 which have terrible sats.

I can't comment on the 7100Plus system personally, but I've always found the 3dss guys to be very thorough and accurate in speaker testing. Mark says he's found the 7100Plus sats to be behind the DTT3500s. And I trust his opinion.

But everyone has different opinions on what makes good speakers.
Many people like the Klipsch ProMedias, I find them to be an insult to my ears.
The 3dss.com guys tend to look for the same thing in a speaker set I do, so I'm going by their reviews.

But if you look for something else in your speakers, perhaps their reviews aren't as accurate for you, becuase speakers are a very subjective thing.

Cambridge/Creative Microworks are awesome speakers and can be had for a very good price now. I have seen them as low as 150.

if you want to do the ebay thing you can get a set of Klipsch ProMedias v2.400. I've had this set for a while now and it still rocks hard.

You might also want to consider the Yamaha TSS-1's for ~$180. The combined total of its 5 satellites and subwoofer is only 48W, but it feels like a much louder system. Yamaha's Active Servo system really works, IMO. Plays games and movies nicely (4-channel sound card support, virtual surround for coax/optical S/PDIF connections, Dolby Pro Logic decoding, Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding, and DTS decoding). Watching Gladiator in DTS on it is just incredible. Clean, sharp audio; doesn't have that muddy boominess I hear from a lot of other speakers.

Downside is that it hasn't been reviewed that much, even though it's been out for at least 5 months.

BTW, from the choices you listed, I would go for the 4800's.

Yamaha's not too good according to Anandtech :)link here

I would say the BA4800's rock, but I am biased since I already own a set :)

They give you the best bang for your buck and in my opinion sound better than the creative DTT 2500 (gets distorted @ high volume, i would know my roomate has a set had to put up with it for a year :()
