I parked behind the library today. I have parked there several times before, but today I was stalked by security. 7 minutes after I leave my car I got a nice little yellow "Thank you for parking here. That'll be $10 or further action will be taken." Note on my windsheild. Now the spot I parked in happened to be right in front of a gas meter and there absolutely was NOT a Reserved Parking sign infront of that d@mn spot. There might have been one 2 spots down on either side but there wasn't one right in front of the spot. Should I contest it or just pay up? Do I have a case?

Always contest college parking tickets. I contested mine and didn't have to pay $20. :)

Of course, they had no legitimate reason to fine me in the first case, but I think rather than listen to you complain they will just drop it. ;)

Only $10???? At my school they were $90!!!! I had a friend that ran up at least $3000 worth of tickets in a year before they caught up with him. Somehow, he got it reduced to 'only' $500.

Permit costs over $300 now...

He he By the time I figured out how to do a poll I had 3 replies. So I guess I'll contest it.

I have paid over 20 parking tickets at my college. $15 each...I just prefer to pay tickets than for a parking permit ;)

As long as it isn't too much money, just pay the damn thing and don't make the same mistake of parking there. With the time you waste contesting it, you could make that money back somewhere else. Besides, it isn't like it goes on any permanent record anywhere like your driving record. It also doesn't affect insurance rates. Personally I wouldn't waste my time and would just pay it. There is always a chance you won't get out of it, and if that happens, you'll be even more pissed.

divinemartyr,

The $20 wasn't even an issue for me. It would have essentially been coming directly from my dad (spoiled me, I know).

The problem I had was the fact that they gave me a ticket for absolutely no reason. This was right after I had just spent a lot of money buying my books for the semester. I didn't feel like taking it up the a$$ twice in one day.

It really pissed me off, but not because of the $20.

Those college security rent-a-cops really piss me off.

Thank goodness my college career is over.

cbrsurfr looks into his wallet and frowns :( only $5. I am going to have to contest it. With $15k+ a year tuition, $500 in books, and a $345.43/month car payment I can't afford $10, unless I solicite myself on campus and dark street corners.

Goto the bank and get it all in pennies. Mean, yes, but it does offer some sort of satifaction. Usually, they dont even acept it (or try to make you count it), but be firm :)

What i've done is use my parking ticket as a parking permit. Say I get a parking ticket, I then don't pay the ticket untill the end of the quarter so I can register for classes. What I do is stick the parking ticket on my winshield whenever I park on campus, and when those stupid wannabe cops on golf carts come around they are about to give me a ticket, but they see I already have one and they don't bother me.

You're paying $345 a month for a car payment while you're in school? Well I don't know everything about your situation, but it sure looks to me like that could be one of your biggest problems right there. Maybe you ought to sell that bad boy and get something less expensive so you can actually eat and do stuff while you're in school. Then when you get out of college and start making more money you can sell it and get the car you want.

these are COLLEGE tickets

since they don't go on your police record, fight as much as you can

i personally know about 4 people who have at least $400 worth of tickets and they all graduated without paying a cent : )

for parking tickets you have nothing to lose but time if you fight it. How much is your time worth to you?

Heh...the parking stickers from my old university actually had a phrase on them saying something like, "The amount of your ticket is _____. Please enclose it in the included envelope and mail to ______. You have the right not to pay this parking ticket, though if you do not then further action could be taken at a later date."

Never paid that bad boy and haven't heard anything about it since :) Though our campus actually had city police officers patrolling as opposed to the regular rent-a-cop types, so they were a bit more intimidating.

I'd say fight the ticket. Most colleges won't care about the money, and only seem to hand out tickets as incentive to buy a permit.

I once got a ticket for going down a one way. I contested it and totally got away. The situation was different though. I was a commuter and I was following my girlfriend at the time to her dorm. I didn't know it was a one way, the signs were at the other end so I just followed her, they pulled us both over, the 2 guys went to her car but let her go and walked right over and gave me a ticket. As soon as I told that to the committee they told me that I could leave and sorry for all the trouble, but not before they got the guys' names, haha, they got in trouble for ticketing a guy but letting a girl go.

Forgot to add, about a week later there was a sign at the head of that road saying do not enter, seems what I told them actually had a effect for once.

The $345 is for my baby, 2000 Mercury Cougar V6. I call her Kitty, if only I could train her to attack rent a cops. I am just going to fight it, since I have nothing better to do. I'll let you guys know how it works out.
