Poll: College and Computers: Which way to swing?

I'm going to college next year, and I've already started thinking what I would need most in college. On one hand, a regular desktop would allow for a lot of processing power for LAN games, but on the other a laptop would be more convenient during class. I was also thinking of my iPaq to act as an in-class tool, but it doesn't seem adequit. Those who go/went to college, what have you found to be useful and why? Do majors matter?

i would get a regular desktop and a cheap old palm with kb for taking notes. the palm keyboard is a top quality unit that will rival the best of laptop kb's...

I rarely found myself taking a laptop to class. Nor did I see many others at any point that had them.

I'd suggest desktop. More power and cheaper. You aren't going to need to lug your laptop to class very often.

Or maybe my school was different...

up here at the university of connecticut, nobody takes laptops to class, not even to big lectures...

you're gonna miss the gaming, dude... just get a desktop 🙂

desktop is the way to go...

but if you get a laptop.. don't forget to buy a lock so you can attach it to your bed or desk or something. There are theives in every college, no matter where you go....

Desktop and laptop. 🙂 I game on the desktop, experiment with the laptop. GOt some new programs to play with? Goes on the laptop to make sure that it won't mess up my desktop. I also use my laptop as a dedicated CS and DOD server when we feel like getting a Lan game on. 🙂

I take a laptop to class.

I can type properly so I don't need to look at my keyboard just at the class and I type away. I find it convient as I can type fast. Much faster then I can write and for longer periods without tiring. My laptop is small though 1.7kg with battery though so its light and very portable. I also have a desktop to update files and such. The keyboard of my laptop is good to type on and its pretty quick PIII 850, 384mb ram, 20gb.

I only see about 2 other guys that have laptops though.

If you can afford it get a good laptop and then a desktop as well. My desktop is only PIII 500 with a TNT2 32mb but it plays games good enough. I dont' game much but its pretty quick at 1024x768 though.

If you can type quickly I'd get a laptop but if you can't its going to be slower then writing then.

I have a desktop for gaming, laptop w/dvd for watching divx's and dvd's...and an ipaq 3835 which I take to classes. I'm not rich, I just work

gotta go with a desktop and a laptop. actually ive got two towers and a laptop. i use the laptop for the times when i am at home since home is 20 hours away from school

I've a desktop right now, but my desk is so small that doing homework on my desk is not very feasible. I purchased an IBM T23 1.13GHZ; 128MB; 48GB 5400RPM HD; 802.11B integrated, 14.1" TFT display, and DVD. HOpe to get 1GB RAM, and combo drive soon.

If you play games, then get a desktop. I don't, and will never tinker with my computer again. The laptop discourages me from tinkering it...and it's an IBM. Reliability is a must!!

But yea...desktop all the way...there's really no other time you'll be needing a laptop unless you go to the library a lot because your roommate won't let you work in peace.

get a medium priced laptop, go for more of a slim small factor laptop, and also get a very cheap desktop. bare essentials only. you can always upgrade the desktop throughout the year and it wouldnt be so hard with the hot deals forum here at AT.

assume you could have had $2000 to build a killer rig desktop. use $1000-$1200 to buy some small laptop. the other day at frys i saw the 2nd smallest sony notebook at only $1000. sure it was only 600mhz celery but it had 128RAM and enough harddrive for school docs. at least its a small factor laptop so you can actually take it to a coffee shop or library to write those last minute essays instead of at your dorms with all those distractions.

use the remaning money to buy a desktop even if its not what you'd expect. go with a duron system in an athlonxp mobo, with a small 10gb or 20gb harddrive, onboard sound, GF2MX vid card, network etc. You can always upgrade your desktop. laptops cant be upgraded cept for ram.

do not get a palm right now. use your money to invest in the stuff above. i have a palm and got tired of using it within 10 weeks. im not saying you will but its not like you will miss it if you havent had one yet.

ive gone through all three.

You need a desktop. You should see my brother's rig. He's got two midi keyboards attached to his PC, he had two qwerty keyboards at one point, triple monitor, vcr, stereo, speakers, etc.
