Yes, there is a reason I made the other thread and this one too :)

Which of these would you pick if buying new? The cars are all similar in cost. This would be any of the corollas, any of the civics (minus the SI or hybrid), and any of the 1.8 liter sentras. Horsepower for all is sentra (126), corolla (130), civic (115 or 117). Sentra gets an average of 31.5 mpg. Corolla is 35ish and the civic is a touch higher, especially with the HX version.

Civic, because I wouldn't be getting it for performance but for daily driving. I already have a 240sx, and it will someday have a Skyline I6 (could I call it 250sx?).

I voted Sentra because I own a Sentra and I love it.

BTW Skoorb, you can add me to your Nissan database if you'ld like. I have a Mystic Green 2002 Nissan Senta! Yay me! maybe I'll send you a pic of the car sometime.

I have a 2003 Civic LX (non vtec). I do 36mpg city driving. not too sure about highway since I've never had it a long a trip yet. Even though the hp has the lowest rating from the above bunch, it does have some kick. The Sentra would prolly give you the best seat of the pants feeling and I feel that the Corollas are a little overpriced for what you get.

You could not go wrong with the Civic or Sentra, if you want to throw away some bones get a Corolla.

My fiance and I may be making that choice early next year. Right now we're leaning towards the Corolla.

I like the 2 door Civics. Corollas are better looking than the 4 door Civic though. Sentras are nice all around.

2 Door Civic > 4 Door Corolla > 4 Door Sentra > 4 Door Civic

I would rate them as such:

1. Golf TDI
2. Corolla S
3. Civic Si Coupe
4. Hyundai Elantra GT
.
.
.
998. Steamy pile of Dog Crap
999. Nissan Sentra

Seriously, my roommate had a Sentra as a loaner when his car was totalled and it was a POS. The interior was extremely low rent, and it was gutless to boot. :(

Are you freaking kidding me, n8magic?! You said you're gonna can your TDI the second you're no longer upside down on it. Almost everybody on ATOT - including you - is sick of their VW's reliability issues!! :Q

Those issues have been straightened out to my satisfaction.

My previous ranting and raving was typical heat of the moment stuff. I still wub my VW.

The 1.8 liter engine in the base Sentra makes 129 ft-lbs of torque at a low 2,400 RPM which is just as good or better than most competitors for around-town driving. Yes, it's gutless, but no more gutless than the other cars in this poll.
However, I'll agree that the interior is not good. The Sentra is up for a redesign soon and I hope they address that.

Of course, I'm not sure how you ranked the Golf above the dog crap, but whatever. ;)

N8magic, it's ok. I've been there before too. I konw how much you dearly want to enjoy and cherish your VW, but those hateful things you said about it were based in something real. I was the same way with my 89 accord that kept having issues. After one was fixed and it drove well for 4 days I was back to liking it, but in the end after weighing things and having one too many problems with it I sold it for the piece of sh*t it was, and I fear you'll reach the same conclusion with your veedub. You don't see people coming on and bitching about their new accord that keeps having issues like you do with the VW. Search your soul N8magic, for you know I speak the truth!

And come on you wouldn't be seen in a hyundai would you? Damn! Spend $13,500 now and in two weeks it's worth $1800

Honda Civic.

The Mazda 3 seems hot but AGAIN it boils down to proven reliability and resale value for me.

If the Mazda 3 had those two, I'd get it in a heart beat. Call me weird but I kinda like the Honda Civic styling, shh you didn't hear that from me :p and yes I will deny it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the new Mazda 3 just using the existing Euro Focus body? I think it'd just new sheet metal on it.

Mazda 3 all the way!

Quoted before you can edit the post :D I liked the civic styling at first. I hate it now. But, the HX gets stupid-good gas economy, and civics have retarded resale value too. I will probably check out a 3, but I think they are out of the price range and not far short of the next rung of cars (accord, altima, camry). Sure, MSRP may be low on the cheap one but if you want any options it looks like you'll need to pay a bit and I doubt dealers will drop much on them. Of course realistically speaking these cars are so low end that bad vs. good resale isn't necessarily huge anyway. Reliability I've no doubt the 3 will experience some initial quality issues, as most new models do, but if it was in the same price range as these cars it would probably win out, if only for the 148 HP.

I think the Civic Hybrid is a waste of $. It's been discussed here before and I read a magazine review comparing the costs against a traditional Civic LX. They cost about the same when you factor in the Civic Hybrid is $20, the LX is around $15, the gas savings, etc. If I were going for best mileage I'd definitely go all out geek and get a 2004 Toyota Prius (someone really should bump that thread ;) ).

Being the cheap ass I am, would never pay more than $13,500 out the door for a brand new Civic LX automatic. Otherwise might as well slap on another $3k and buy a new Mazda 6.

Corolla here.

After dealing with a Ford for a while, reliability is a large factor, as well as price. Corolla falls in there nicely with our 2004 Corolla S coming in at a hair over $17k, almost fully loaded, (including a $500 freight charge), just lacking the big bonuses like 6 speaker system and CD changer. Being sporty means absolutely nothing to myself or my wife in a car (we're getting the S because of features, not becuase of the letter), especially since we'll probably have children to worry about long before we get rid of the car. It's got plenty of power for getting us around and the gas mileage is outstanding, which was a large factor in the decision since 99% of our driving is in town, but we'll probably be making a few 3000+ mile trips coming up in '04.

let me just throw this in--- In my old 2001 Sentra XE - i would regularly get 35-37mpg highway. (despite the much lower sticker numbers)... not that gas mileage would be the deciding factor, but i just thought i'd toss that out there.

anyhow-- i still voted for the sentra, even though its a bit smaller than the others, you get way more bang for your buck (IMO)-- and just as reliable as either the honda or toyota.
