[POLL] Cell Phone Provider

I realize there are a lot of threads on cell phones but this one has a POLL...see 🙂. Anyway I'm on an old plan with AT&T but want a new phone and possibly new provider.

I want (in order):
good coverage
cheap plans
free long distance
free roaming
cool phone
don't need that terrible many minutes

My initial thoughts: T-Mobile and Verizon generate a lot of buzz and seem to offer good deals in an attempt to get the lions share of the market, mostly good stuff. AT&T seems good, nothing fancy, nuetral but spendy. Cingular is cheap but bad service. Sprint sucks. Nextel Sucks.

EDIT: I'm in East Bay, California

I have Sprint and my only complaint atm is the lack of SMS messaging (short mail sucks).

But other than that, the pricing is very reasonable ($100 for 5000 minutes + free data + free pcs->pcs + free nights/weekends) and I find the service to be generally quite good. I've found only one "cold spot" that has really bad service for sprint only (i.e. cingular, att etc don't also have bad service in this "spot")

Got a nice deal on a Sanyo 8100 too ($100). Although I would recommend that you NOT get a camera phone and if possible spend more to get other features (especially size...) The camera is a gimmick and you will use it for a few days then it will just sit there. I wish I had gone for a smaller, camera-less phone, but oh well.

I have AT&T TDMA. I am probably going to switch carriers when my contract runs out. Their TDMA service here in Portland has always been pretty good, but it has started to deteriorate lately because I think they are putting more resources into expanding their GSM network. However, I've heard their GSM network is quite crappy.

I'm thinking T-Mobile, but I'll have to wait and see.

I've got Sprint here. It seems OK but I have nothing to compare it to as it is the only wireless company I've ever used.

Thanks to those who responded. I'm leaning towards Verizon as they seem to have the largest coverage map right now. And also if I sign a 2 year agreement it's better if they have the best "home" coverage b/c I'm not sure if I'll still live in the East Bay, Cali in 2 years.

Yup Verizon. Can't beat coverage. I have a notorious dead spot right here where I sit in my home office which simply can't happen... but Verizon has come through with at least 1 bar and not yet a dropped call. I ditched Sprint for this reason alone, even though I got 25% off monthly for Sprint and free wireless web. Verizon only gives me 21% but what good is a phone you can't use when/where you need it most ?

(Surprised this specific poll has never been done before)

verizon on the east coast at least.

had tmobile for a year but found areas on the east coast where i didn't get a signal.

have yet to have that problem with verizon.

Tmobile for me! w00t!
they are the cheapest right now. Get More (TM)

T-Mobile...

Sony Ericsson T610 kicks major butt (got mine for free)!
GSM = I'm getting on the same page as the rest of the world instead of using the sh!t technology only offered here.
GSM = Best voice quality!
GSM = I can use my phone in Europe or anywhere else in the world.
Sony Ericsson + GSM = SMS the way it's suppose to be done.
Customer Service is great!

getting the t610 for free is nothing to brag about. my friend got one 2 weeks ago. He got it for free with $250 rebate.
total cost = -$250
you also forget to mention the connectivity on your phone. bluetooth + Infarred. The verizon folks will come by and claiming bluetooth is useless. the truth is verizon doesn't offer a phone with bluetooth enable.
btw, you can go to wap for free, have fun checking email on your phone(if you know how)

Verizon has been great for me. I had them in South Carolina and now in Michigan. Plus work is paying for it now.
😀

Verizon. They have good coverage and better than average customer support. In my area, Sprint has better coverage, but I hate the way they treat customers.

too bad the T610 has horrible reception. I've had it for 6-7 months now and I hate it. The camrea sucks and i don't get reception where my friends do. I can't wait to get a new phone.
