I just got a celeron 566(oem-SL4PC)& trying to o/c it at 850(8.5 by 100) in an Abit BE6-II(slot-1) using slocketIII(all jumpers in auto). It will POST but then win98se hangs-up.In the bios cpu temp. indicates 58-59 deg.C (fan/heatsink-oem) with this setting. Also tried 8.5 by 75, and it seems to be ok.

I heard that celeron 533A & 566 could go as high as 800 & 850, respectively.Or maybe even higher.
Any comments/suggestion or piece of advice?
Pls. help.

Your temp is too high, it should be less than 40 C. Make sure your heat sink is making good contact with the CPU.

it sounds like you need better cooling and thermal paste for the cpu temp, and a bump in voltage should stabilize your 566@850. I've had 4 of these cpu's and all of these would do the dance at 850; two of 'em needed 1.85V-1.9V, one of 'em needed 1.8V, and one only needs 1.7V to go 850MHz.

just the usual $0.02:)

I did used thermal paste, but I think you're right, I need a better heatsink/fan combination. What type of hsf did you used in your 4 celeron566 running at 850? Have you tried pushing any of them to higher than 850?

Is it true that OEM CPUs are second class to RETAIL(or boxed) CPUs as far as overclockability is concern?

Thanks.

last week I bought a Cel 566 (OEM) and overclocked to 850 (1.65v) with a Golden Orb and Slotket.

Now it runs at 954 (FSB 112), 1.9v. Mine is an OEM, cB0.

I have two retail box 566@850s, both with the fan that came in the box. The stock Intel fans aren't bad, sometimes better than aftermarket units. The Celerons are on a BH6 at 1.65 volts and 1.75 volts. Have you checked the actual voltage going to the CPU. Check in the BIOS and see if it gives the voltage. Try setting the bus speed to 66 and check the voltage with some utility like Motherboard Monitor. What's the temperature at 566MHz?? Rick.

Check what voltage is actually being used for the CPU... I think the bios has an option to show that. Perhaps it's not getting set correctly.

That temp reading is WAY high just for booting up the system. Even a cheap-o heatsink should let you boot up into windows. I suspect the CPU voltage is too high, or the heatsink is not making proper contact.

FWIW, I had a 533 that did 824MHz at default voltage. And I'm currently using a 566 @ 103MHz bus (850+) and it's been solid at default voltage. The 533 was using a cheapo heatsink and the 566 I have a Chrome Orb.

Here's the specs of my 566:

566/128/66/1.7V MALAYSIA
Q043A541-1737 SL4PC

The Vcore I've been using is the default voltage of 1.7V.
And I'm sure the heatsink is properly attached with the flip chip(with thermal grease of course).

I'll try to use a better cooler.

You are aware that too much thermal grease is as bad or worse than not enough. It should be a VERY THIN layer, basically just smudge it over the cpu (evenly), like you were trying to wipe it off your finger... not like you are trying to paint the cpu with it.

Before Clamping down the heatsink, I usually twist it around a little, without any downward pressure (just left/right movement).

Also, If you've got heatsink tape and grease that is a problem as well. Make sure that you don't have both. Remove one or the other. (Usually the tape is less efficient than the grease).

If you are using an AGP Video card, make sure it's not getting overclocked. That can cause problems as well. If you have a setting for AGP Clock, make sure it is at 2/3 FSB (=66MHz).

Lastly, it is possible you got a dud. To be honest, it sounds like it based on the temperature. Not 100% of the CPU's will overclock. Just seems like it because everyone brags that there's does. Still, with a good heatsink and a little extra voltage you can probably get it higher. See if you have a 95MHz FSB Speed. That's a good compromise if you can't get to 100MHz FSB.

Anything between 75-83MHz is risky because the PCI bus get's OC'ed.

i owned c2 566 once

i got it over 850 on an Abit SE6

one thing you need is the voltage and you always can connect the VID0,1 and 2 pins and get your voltage to 1.9v
