Poll: Catch 22 Traffic Law Question...

on a multiple lane highway (4 lanes+) at 4am (redeye from VT back to philadelpha and points beyond), I was in the far left lane (awaiting a left offramp) with one of my buddies, doing about 70 (in a 65)... two things happen next... we start coming up on an unmarked crown vic (doing 65) in the next lane to our right and another car starts following us closley.... before we realized the crown vic was indeed a cop, it was too late....

boxed in with a cop on the right and a car behind, we were left with a dilema....

pace the cop car or slow down, breaking the law by acting retarded in a passing lane.... or
maintain speed, pass cop, get over.... break law via speeding....

we did the latter and got pulled over and got a verbal warning warning... he berated us for having the audacity to pass him, told us the speed limit was 55 (untrue, I was keeping constant vigil on this, but we kept our mouths shut) and said he had clocked us much further back at much greater speeds (75+)

what should have we done?

Sub question.... do highway cars have rear and forward facing speed systems?

no only foward radar! and it generally doesn't work around bends or when other vehicles are with in 5 metres of the car

hmmm it seems that yanks use a better system than the Aussie..I say suck sh*t to american motorists

Wish you had any clue what you were talking about

I did get a good look at his dash as I went by and there was a box about the size of a cdrom drive (oriented so it would be ejecting at the left mirror) atop his dashboard with two sets of red numerical readouts... one at one point definitley was reading in the 70's.... I have no idea wtf it was, but we were abreast of him when I saw it

it was a relativley new crown vic (within the last body style.... would have had the upgraded wheels if it was civilian... etc...) if that helps

Even if whatever state you were in had a law against staying in the left lane, it wouldn't matter if you are coming up to an off-ramp. So I'm not sure what law you would have been breaking.

On all highways between DC and NY that I've ever been on, signs say "left lane passing only, slower traffic keep left" and some go as far as to remind you that it's the law.... we had no idea how far up our ramp was anyway... turned out to be 15 miles, we just knew it would be on the left....

In my car, I have a front and a rear radar antenna, and the readout displays both my speed, and the target speed. The self-speed allows for pacing other cars... so if one readout was 70, that was probably his speed, and you were going faster than that.

yep, obviously yanks use a much better system than the "state of the art" systems that the Australian police force use..I stand corrected!

Screw it, even knowing that it got you pulled over, I still would've done it. Pulled over for 70 in a 65, HAH! He's got nothing better to do. I'm not a fan of showing weakness around the cops. Not that I'm going to break the law in their face, but hell, 70 in a 65? Get real!

You do 66 in a 65 and they will write you up here.

Have to contribute to the Police Christmas party at the end of the year ya know.

Greatest feeling isn't it?

Drove past a cop doing about 90... he was doing about 80 behind a truck in the left lane. I was in my unmarked and he was in an almost identical unmarked. Soon as I got around the truck I got a nice straight open road and floored it.

Ahh... one of these days I am gonna get my cumupins.

So in reality you were doing about 75, right?

No. Why would I lie here? I told you the whole story and left nothing out. Please do not put words in my mouth. That was exactly how it happened. Cruise control was on because a few traps already spooked us, we were locked at 70 in a VW Passat. If any car on the road today should have an accurate spedo, it should be that car.

german cars have the least accurate speedometers. GM vehicles have the most.
