At first I thought I would be against the death penalty, since after all your killing another person but then I tried to put myself in the shoes of a victim or their family. So I would say as of now i'm undecided but if someone I knew was killed I would most likely want them to recieve the same treatment they dished out.

btw I think it should be proven w/out a doubt that the act(homocide) truly occured!

an eye for an eye??

It depends on a case by case scenario.
If someone is wrongly accused and found guilty then the system has failed.
But then again, there is always a 1-4% error in all systems.

Killing criminals is the most foolish thing you can do, especially if that criminal you're frying in the chair is later found out to be innocent... oops...

That's why I'm glad that the country I live in doesn't use the death penalty for over 100 years now.

I'm for the death penalty. It's not used in petty cases --there has to be hard evidence (and a lot of it) to convict someone with a death sentance. Death row is different than the death sentance, as I understand. That I'm not for because I'm sitting here paying for someone else to live it up in prison for the rest of their life. Dat no good. But, when it comes down to putting another human down for some insane crime against humanity, you bet I'm all for capital punishment.

I would expect no less if I were some psycho killer. Well... I probably wouldn't expect to get caught, but I would expect the family of the people I slaughtered in some sick way to demand justice just as I do now.

Everytime I question my beliefs regarding the death penalty I see a story like this and I once again am certain that in some cases the death penalty is justified.

How do you decide who gets the death penalty and who doesn´t? This guy who killed his two daughters for example. Most people ( probably all people ) ,would be more upset about the double homocside of two little girls than two grown men. But does that mean that the person who commites the murders should recieve a more severe penalty just because the way the public views his crime?

Murder is a horrible crime. In fact it´s so horrible the convicted murderer also has to be killed just to show how bad it is to kill someone. In my view that´s twisted.

It's not like these killers go from the courtroom to the gas chamber. It takes many years of legal appeals before they die -- and at a cost of millions of dollars in legal expenses, paid by taxpayers.

Does anyone know of a case where a person was shown to be innocent after they were executed?

<< Does anyone know of a case where a person was shown to be innocent after they were executed? >>

it's a pain in the ass to reopen a case without any new evidence. Anyway, the "new evidence" wouldn't take 10 years or so to turn up if it were there, right? Besides, once the case if over with, it's closed and any "new evidence" that would be able to reopen the case would have to be presented to the officials -they don't keep beating a dead horse (no pun intended) afterwards.

It's highly unlikely that someone who has actually been executed has been found innocent afterwards. I know of cases where the person was on death row and was found to be innocent after this "new evidence" but not anyone who's been executed, no.

This topic has huge pro/cons. I'll just mention a few pts.

First off, capital punishment is needed as a deterrent for all those
thinking to commit a SERIOUS crime. Without it, they just say, "so what
if I get caught, I'll just spend the rest of my life with free room and board."

How should society punish serial killers, mass murders, and the rest
of those unthinkable crimes? -- put them in jail like all the other
criminals?

Awhile back, I watched a 60 minute special regarding the US Correctional
system..(or whatever the formal title is)..they showed on the average,
each prisoner cost us tax payer $35,000 each YEAR to SUPPORT!
Damn, some of us honest folks don't even make 35k a year!

A lot of foreign countries have sever punishment for drug dealing/rape/murder
and they seem to be working.

I guess one of the major arguement against this is "what happens if we
get the wrong guy?" In the US, when the convicted felony is given the
death sentence -- he doesn't get killed right away. He sits on death
row for 10-20 years before anything happens. So he gets time to appeal.
What a system eh?

well, whatever. our system of justice protects the criminal and put the
burden on the innocent.

I honestly don't care either way. It's not an issue that's of significance for me. The whole idea of capital punishment I thought was to put criminals away forever so that they are no longer a threat to society. Life imprisonment serves the same purpose thus I can't choose one or the other.
