I've always jsut assumedthat people know how to swim. I've been able to do it since I was about 5 years old. I actually don't see how you can pass high school gym without knowing how to swim. But, lately, I've been seeing a lot of people who mention that they can't swim. I want to see how common it is not to know how to swim.

I can go from one side of the pool to the other w/o drowning so I guess that can be classified as swimming. I'm not exactly umm.. graceful though, hehe.

So.. I'm a crappy swimmer, but a swimmer I guess. I got thru high school being in band. (Marching season counts as PE and fine arts credit.. woot.. more electives free!)

Not well e.g. I'm decent but I can't keep up w/my 18yo sister, 12yo and 9yo brothers who play water polo...but I can survive being dropped a mile into the ocean :)

Yeah, I had to take a mile swim test on Cape Cod before I was allowed to go out on my family's yacht sans life jacket. Think I was 8 or 9.

Obviously you got the idea from my snorkeling thread ... and you're right... it is assumed most people know how to swim... depends on your upbringing, depends on the people you hang out with, depends on whether or not your school required it.

Well I never learned during my childhood because neither of my parents knew how and I never needed to... my mom is deathly afraid of the water. In HS, the phys ed class required swimming and some of us got excused for it (my excuse was allergies to chlorine). It wasn't like they taught you either... they just made you do it and I suppose they ASSUMED everyone already knew how.

So by college, I signed up for a non-swimmers class and the grade was based simply on attendance. It takes me a lot of courage to swim the length of the pool with the proper method of breathing. I think I was successful only a couple of times. I haven't had much practice since then and so I've lost all technique... so I consider myself a non-swimmer. I can do the dead-man's float on my back... that's about it. I think I just need to work up the courage to do the breathing correctly without taking water up my nose or choking on that water I drink while inhaling... that blows... and it certainly doesn't give me incentive to try it again on the same day...

Just another thing....swimming in the ocean is much different than swimming in a pool. I've often thought of myself to be a good pool swimmer only to be quickly tired out by currents, waves, etc. Also, having your goggles on, looking into the blue pool versus pitch black of the open sea can be a bit scary as well.

Nope! I love the water too... I have no fear of going on boats and junk (I just realized that's a pun :))... I figure I will learn how when I manage to make some time to go to adult swimming classes.

As a kid I was more self concious of the fact that I could not swim, but now it does not seem to be a big deal.

I don't know how to swim. I don't think it's a high school requirement any longer either.

Ugh. I've never been able to wear goggles. They're too confining. Bare eyes all the way.
