It took a long time for me to realize you're not actually blowing or using your cheeks, you just need to use your tongue to "push" the smoke out. Once I figured that out I was a smoke ring champ.

Same way as blowing out through your lungs... make a "O" face, but instead of blowing move your tongue quickly and you'll push a ring out. It's actually a lot easier than it sounds.
