Poll: Can you be lost and freaked out in a haunted maze (or haunted whatever) and still come out having had a fun time?

I had the unfortunate discussion this morning with a co-worker who thinks he's fairly intelligent about everything known to man. We got into a discussion about haunted houses, trails, mazes, etc this morning, and how I had went to one last night. My wife works for Clear Channel locally, and a haunted trail here in town is advertising on one of the radio stations. So, to basically "beta" test their trail before opening to the public, everyone in her workplace were invited to come try it out for free and let the trail management work any kinks out.

I was talking to the co-worker about how lame it was, and what they could've done to make it better. Then I mentioned that another guy was telling me about a local haunted maze, one he went to last year. He said that basically it was a complex maze, mostly pitch black dark, and when he did it last year, he was lost for 2-3 hours trying to get out of the thing. He said that it was really good because it was a mental fear instead of physical fear, and even though he was thoroughly freaked trying to find his way out, it was still a good experience.

So, at that point, the co-worker know-it-all basically starts making fun of me in a non-direct way that you can't have fun when you're freaked out, lost in a dark maze for 2 hours. More jokes, more poking fun, so I finally walk away. He gets into those moods where if someone else is around, his jokes tend to poke fun at someone (usually me) just to get laughs, and he doesn't quit until you leave.

So, I wanted to take a poll and see what you guys thought. Can you be lost and freaked out in a haunted maze (or haunted whatever) and still come out having had fun? I'm not talking about having fun while you're IN the maze, just looking back on it and saying that it was a fun time with friends? I'm also not saying that you had fun, in that you'd go back and do it again the next night, either. Just, overall, could you say that you had a fun time after it was over with?

Maybe I'm wrong. That's what I want to find out.

I'd probably have fun depending on who I was with. If I was with the fun governor, she would get mad and start nagging and probably be genuinely scared. If I was with my buddies, we'd probably intentionally get more lost and blaze one.

He's wrong but maybe he just hates you and uses any excuse to belittle you until you leave. Maybe you are over-thinking the issue and missing the real issue (why this guy does this).

You're coworkers is a douche. At the end when you look back at what you just did you will surely realize how fun it was. Happens all the time, like playing a really hard video game, most of the time you wanna drop kick your system but once you figure out how to pass it you realize how fun it was.

Absolutely you can have fun when scared. In a haunted maze or in other things.

I have a fear of drowning, don't like breathing through my mouth and consider myself an untrained and poor swimmer, so every time I go Scuba diving I am scared before I get in the water. I am one big mistake away from death as if you drown 60 feet under water with 20 pounds of added weight, you are totally screwed. But when its all over and we sit on the boat chatting about what we saw, it was a great time.

My friend who went Sky diving just recently was scared the whole way down. Are they going to do it again... you betcha.

It depends on the person I think. The fact that something like that can create such a strong reaction in you is awesome.

When I was projectionist at a theatre years ago and the exorcist was re-released my girlfriend and I went over at like 2am (it was a small 10 screen) and had our own screening of the movie in the dark theatre. It was the first time seeing the movie for the both of us and we got the crap scared out of us, but it was one of the funnest things we ever did.

I'd say no, mostly because all of those places around where I live are super lame. The only fun one I remember was as a kid. It was a haunted trail ride as a kid, and there were the usual creepy people hiding along the way. At the very end, this guy, who had been hiding in some hay on the cart the entire time. He jumped out and scared the crap out of everyone, and proceeded to burrow through the hay making swipes at people.

Psychologically there's a lot going on and everybody is different.

Your co-worker is definately a douche though.

the reason why haunted houses are no longer fun (as an adult) is the fear factor is gone. as a kid, that was the entire point.

You can, and obviously the guy did, or the maze was really poorly designed such that there was no way to get help if you were lost.

I wouldn't say it was "fun", but exciting, exhilirating, those can be great emotions too. It gets your adrenaline pumping, and even if it wasn't "fun" it's still a great time.

If I was honestly terrified, I'd love it.

There isn't enough scary stuff to do now :(

I agree with this.

Sure. Probably for the same reason that some people are excited by pain, fear raises endorphins.
