Italy has only been a country for the last 100 years. Its realy still a bunch of city/states. There are 88 dialects of italian though there are many dialects of american english as well. My grandparents immagrated from palmerno (sicily) and I am told that my grandfather would rather talk to a duchman that an italian at least the duchman didnt butcher his language. My father till his dieing day considered any one from north of rome to be swiss with a vowel on the end of his name. Most italian american's are sicilian or extreame southern italian. Nothern italy is rich southern italy is poor, rich peaple dont tend to leave home.
