forget shocked in horror. how about violent? if i went downtown and heard a couple of brothers calling each other the N word (and not their "version" of it, altho i think that applies as well) and said "hey what's up my N words" i'd probably be severely beaten or dead the next day. just my guess.

Do you have some deep urge to be allowed to say it too? If not, why do you care if black people say it?

I'd also like to point out that no one is stopping white people from using the word. But since you know it's an offensive and derogatory word to a group you are not a part of, just don't be suprised at the repercussions (people thinking less of you, or people of the group you are insulting getting angry).
