I currently have a set of 2.1 Altec Lansing ACS-295 speakers and a Labtec Axis-502 Headset.

***Optional***

What do you have(Brand/model)?
How much was it(If you don't wanna say it thats cool)?
How do you like it(any problems)?

I dunno what to get for Christmas* so I need your help.

Thx,
J

*I'll probably get it after Christmas when everything is on sell.

Headphones. You need them if your game is based on stealthiness (such as CS). You can hear footsteps with any speakers, but with headphones, it is easier to tell which direction they are coming from.

I use my Sony MDR V-600s for gaming. It was probably the best $100 dollars I ever spent although I could have spent it on a lot beter cans. Check out the MDR V-6s or the Grado SR-60s if you want a good pair of headphones under $100.

I use the sennheiser hd 497 headphones. I payed about $70 for them. I enjoy them a lot, and they have decent bass for headphones. The only bad part is that I have a big head, and they feel a little tight on me after a hour or so of use.

I have the FPS2000 4.1 System, and a pair of basic headphones. I use my speaker system primarily, and only headphones if I need to be quiet. I like bass that I can feel... heaphones will never really provide that.

I paidl iek $100 back in the days, I think now they are about $50. I like the style, and provides adequate power. Not worth upgrading IMO unless I go for the Z560's or better. But I would rather spend $100 on a more vital computer part for gaming like a vid card.

well actually it depends

Are you playing the game just to enjoy it, for the sake of being good at it, or both?

Hey now. What about us 2.1ers? ;) Actually, I do have one system with 4.1 and I've heard some high end 5.1s on my friend's system. Nothing still compares to a good set of headphones though IMO.

I have the 4.1 Logitech Z-560's. I got them for $114 around November of '01. I like them a lot except the control center is feeling increasingly cheap everyday especially when looking at the Z-680's control center.

I've got a 5.0 (no sub) HT system. Sony 500W amp and SCE speakers (the entire setup was cheap, but sounds MUCH better/louder than computer speakers).

I also have a set of Sennheiser wireless headphones with DSP. They're great, but the DSP sucks. If I could do it over, I'd get the same model, but save some money and go without the DSP. Oh yeah, it's been about a year, and they broke, but it's nothing a little glue won't fix. They still work great.

Well I got a HT setup, was about $850 when it came out but its 2 rooms away. I know headphones are the best but I want a good set of speakers too for movies and music, but are still functional for games.

I think the MDR V-7506 replaced the MDR V-6.

I mainly use a 4.1 system model ACS56 from Altec Lansing, but for serious playing and night time I use my MDR-V6s (pimped out with velour pads). I got 'em for about 90 bucks a long ass time ago, before the Logitech Z-560s were out otherwise I would've gotten those. I'm satisfied with the ACS56 speakers, though. I might replace them with 5.1 speakers for Doom 3 if it really adds to the atmosphere like I've read. My biggest complaint is the placement of the power button which is on the back of the main satellite (right-front). Luckily they can be turned on by hitting the volume knob or various buttons, but turning it off, I have to reach back there. Pretty balanced sound, but I can hear upper frequencies much more clearly on my Grado SR-60s and Sony MDR-V6s which can be a good thing for listening to MP3s on the speakers... hehe.

System: Klipsch Pro-Media v2.400 (Paid $249 back in the day)
Headphones: Sennheiser HD-202 (Paid $25)

Ive had my Klipsch monsters for about 2-2.5 years now and i LOVE THEM! Still the best computer speakers i've ever heard. I had my amp replaced once because the pots were making a scratching noise when i turned the volume up and down, but Klipsch replaced it for free.

As my for headphones, since im away from my Klipsch until december, i picked them up to satisfy my need to decent music. The laptop speakers werent cuttin it.

Ok this is what I'm feeling:

Headphone are the best. I knew this.
A lot of you enjoy your 4.1 systems.
5.1 isn't as wide spread as I thought.

So do you people with headphones not use mics in the games you play or do you just use those mics on the little stands?

The best would be mic that is attacheable to your headphones. Mics on stands will work too if you feel like leaning into it.

5.1 isn't popular because no games i know of take advantage of the center channel, neither do mp3s or most music cds. Only doom 3 will take advantage of the 5.1.

I think the MDR V-7506 replaced the MDR V-6.

The 7506 is basically the v-6 with a gold plated miniplug and a $120 price tag (v6 is $70)

Unless you have an Nforce with AC-3 encoding...

Midiland 8200 5.1 system. Cost me $240. Its an awesome system and its subwoofer never ceases to amaze me or my friends. For 100 Watts, it a a powerful sub and the satellites have unbelievable clarity. Its decoder is only Dolby and doesnt have DTS but I honestly dont think it matters.
