I'm looking to buy a good new FPS for the system I just built. Trying to decide between these two games. Yes I know how to read reviews, but I want to see what people on these boards suggest.

And a quick question to UT2003 owners: I have the demo and the highest graphics setting option is "normal". Does the retail version offer "high" or "very high" options for stuff like texture quality, etc?

Please vote, and if you have something to say go ahead and post please!

UT2003 is much the same as UT IMO but a lot better in terms of eye candy. However, if you have Broadband I'd go with Battlefield 1942. :)

In terms of eyecandy, I think UT2003 wins. If you want a fun game that isn't like QuakeIII, get BF1942.

Yes I do have broadband. And while eyecandy is good, gameplay/lastability is more important in my book.

Heh.... the games have exactly 4 votes each right now...

Definitely BF1942 for fun factor. The gameplay in UT2003 can be intense, just doesn't seem very fun or rewarding.

Do you like team based gaming? Did you ever play tribes? Then get bf1942! There is nothing like looking up and seeing a plane swoop out of nowhere dropping bombs. And for $20 the expansion for bf1942 will be out in a month!

UT2K3 is good also, but you can always pick this up in a month or two. Besides bombing run (which is hellafun) it's the same old game play thats found in UT. Still a good game though.

I say go with bf1942!

:)

Yes I love Tribes 2, playing that some now in fact. Also a big fan of Team Fortress. I have heard that BF1942 bears some similarity to those games and I like that. I think I'll get BF1942 first, then UT2003 later.

Looks like BF1942 is way in the lead now in the poll :)

Ok, I got the Battlefield 1942 Multiplayer demo but it won't run! I've tried 1.0 and 1.1. As soon as it boots it tries to change resolutions or something, but I hear the error sound and it just doesn't start and I go back to my desktop. (Note, I don't see the error message and for some reason my OS likes to close them before I see them sometimes).

Any Ideas???

I found a log file in there for errors that said this:

(0): Error: : Invalid videomode specified

That would make your idea sound like a feasible way to fix it, but I can't find that line in any file...

not just that.. when you turned all your graphic options to the max, you'll heard a voice saying 'holysh!t'.. it was funny when i hear it for the first time.. after i play game with max graphic option, i understood why the ut2k3 plays the voice when you turned graphic options to the max.. :)

I just played at a friends and BF1942 is awesome! Especially online multiplayer! Now, does anyone know if this game is DirectX only or does it support OpenGL?
