Poll (Burners): Sony vs. Yamaha

I just wanted to get some advise from people that own any of those 2 types of burners. Which according to ur taste (and fact)is a better performer. That includes access speed, burn reliability, cd quality (after its burned), burn speed and looks. What the hell, looks counts to! 🙂 It needs to look good in ur machine.

PS: Thx To All Participants.

Yamaha is a little bit better, not that much though. I have 4x4x16 model and my friend has a Sony 4x4x24, did some comparisons and the Yamaha was better.

that what i thought too, but sony does have good reviews. BTW people i know, Plextor burners are the best but lets just keep them out of this, ok? Sorry, cant affort to buy a Plextor burner 🙁
Keep the coments and specs coming!

Sony isnt good at reading bad quality cd
i have had one and i hated it so much
by the way, i dont know how well the Yamaha reads bad quality cd

however, in terms of burning, i think both drives are fine
yamaha looks better though 🙂

Readability was one of the things I noticed with my friend's Sony. The Yamaha was clearly better than the Sony in reading.

yep
you put in a bad quality cd into the sony

its 'reading' light dont turn off for at least 30sec
and it cannot read most of them at the end

put it another cdrom (even on my crappy AOpen 36x)
reads the disc in 1sec

Around here HP burners are the beginning and End. Since HP burners are the same as Sony Burners, that should count for something I think. (Or Not)

Only beef I have with Yamaha is that it wont work with CloneCD. Sony works 100%. I have a friend that has a Yamaha that can't make backup copies of certain CD's (copy protected). Sony with CloneCD does it just fine.

Have your friend use CDRWin for his burns. I have yet to find anything I can not burn with it.

Plextor: Absolute Best
Yamaha: Very good and extremely cheap

I really can't think of a good reason to buy anything but a Plextor or a Yamaha (between the two depends on your needs and price range).

But between yamaha and sony, Yamaha definately.

Definitely go Yamaha - but I have to say, from the 3 Yamaha burners I've ever owned, they broke really easily. I don't know why, but I don't trust them nearly as much as Plextor drives.

If you want to use CloneCD to backup protected cds then get a Sony. I'm glad I did. Though my next CDRW will be a Plextor.

By the way, I'm not sure how much the burner you're looking for costs, but here's a post on a good deal on a Plextor.

Lore:

They break easily? Thats very uncharacteristic of Yamahas, many Yamaha owners are satisfied with their quality and longevity.

LXi: Yes, in _my_ experience, they break easily.

Do you know how many problems the CDR400C had in its lifetime? You should ask Yamaha (either Craig Campbell or Robert McKeith - one of them left Yamaha but the other is still there, I can't remember which one tho) about them 🙂

The CDR400 Yamaha is a very old model. A LOT of different OLD burners has reliablity problems. The later Yamaha's are excellent burners and all the people that I know have had no problems at all. I have one of the newer HP's that was made by Sony. It's a great burner but will not back up some protected software and this one will not do overburning well either. All my friends Yamaha's will back up anything that we have tried. I am not talking piracy but just making a backup in case something happens to the origional. Plextor's are the finest but also are more expensive. To me Yamaha is the 2nd best CDR out there.

The only type I have owned have been Yamahas. From the 200T on. And I am sick of people saying they are second best! I have Yet to have a bad one and I can make any CD anyone wants. Yes I have only had SCSI but all 3 of my old ones are still used to this day.
