POLL: Build average system or high end ones?

My old system just broke down.
I need to build a new system.
🙁

I need an opinion whether I build an average system with ECS Mobo, Duron CPU or build the high end one with ASUS/Raid Mobo + AthlonXP?

What I have in mind right now if I build average system that cost around $500 maybe in fall 2002 I will definetily build a high end one if I have the money 😉

You can pick up an ECS K7S5A and XP1600+ for around $140-150 shipped now.

why bother to build an average system when you're just going to scrap it for a high end on in a couple months? You obviously have access to a computer, so I'd say suck it up, save the $500 and build yourself a nice rig. You get more time before you have to replace it, and you could probably get a lot more money selling those parts when you do upgrade.

And Viper's right about the high end being an OC'ed P4

my $0.02

I'm an AMD fans 🙂

I don't think I will build Intel system.

If you want me to build Intel system, convince me why I should build Intel system 🙂

I suggest a mixed system. Go high-end on the stuff that really matters to you, and you can skimp a bit on the rest. For instance, you can get a crappy video card if games don't really matter to you, and get a really fast mobo/processor combo. Or vice versa. There's lots of places to spend/save money, just decide which parts are most important to you and spend the most on those.

Gotta go w/ the northwood. Im not against AMD in any way my current system is an 1800+ XP but pentium currently has the best product if your going to overclock. Don't be brand loyal. Get a 1.6a and overclock that thing!

I'd go with as much as you can afford, actually the duron 1300 looks quite nice, grab a soyo dragon+ give yourself quite a bit of room to upgrade later....

Ditto...but just my opinion.

It's a good thing you can OC P4's so much because their default speeds suck. I've had two so far and I must say that I have never been so underwhelmed. The P4 1.6 Willy was almost as fast as my 1.2 Tbird and the p4 1.6a NW OC'd to 2.24 sure doesn't seem to be a who ghz faster than the 1.2 Tbird. I guess If I played Quake it might be more impressive but there's more to computing than playing stupid Kiddie games. <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.xbitlabs.com/cpu/celeron1a-oc/">Hell if they were able to ramp up the Celeron it would kick ass on the P4.

Thats why you dont start at the bottom ie 1.6. You start at 2.2 and go from there.

get an apple, open it, h4x0r its bios, and overclock it to as many digits as the parameters in the "mhz box" will allow

<< You start at 2.2 and go from there >>

Yeah but for $500+ dollars you'd want something that was significantly faster than AMD's $250 XP2100+(and it's only faster if it's OC'd). I guess If money's no object then maybe, but then if money was no object you would want to go with a Dual 2200 Xeon Setup.

I think the smart money would be to by an Average system (either a XP or a Duron) and wait. Right now buying the top end would be a fools bet.
