Poll: Boot up time?

How long does your computer take to boot up after switching on?
Which CPU do you use (make, speed, o/c or not)?
Which mobo do you use (make , chipset)?
Which hard drive do you use? (make, ATA 66/100/133 etc, rpm)?
Which OS do you use?

Mine takes about 40 sec
Athlon 1.33 Ghz, not overclocked
I will KK266R+, VIA KT 133A
IBM 60 GXP, ATA 100, 7200 RPM
Windows XP

Does it really matter?

If you're so worried about boot up times just leave your pc running 24/7.

I am not worried!!!! It was poll to to collect some real data about analysis of Variance. I also design systems. This will give me a good set of information for the best suitable combination of components. Is there any better place than Anandtech for this?

I would like to know if there is a way to improve boot-ups,,,mine is 90 secs. winxp/pro,,,amd k6-500,,,generic ram, probally geniric mobo too,,but there is my times,,,🙁

You really wanna know how? Upgrade!

I agree,,I have a Athlon t-bird collecting dust now till i decide on a mobo for it,,,which is still up in the air,,kid in a candy store with only enuff change for a lil bit o' candy, lol ( decisions-decisions )

26 seconds from when I first see video card bios to "Windows Sound"
The Windows 98 logo appears for approx 4-5 seconds during loading.

Windows 98SE
P3 600E @ 840
Asus P3V4X Bios optimized for fastest bootup 🙂
8.4gig WD @5400rpm ATA66
256meg Mushkin PC133

This is after I formated my hard drive and have virtually nothing on the computer.

I just did it now, and it took 34 seconds when my startup is not optimized for speed.

<< where's the Poll?? 😕 >>

What he said.

BTW, why reboot? Real men leave their PC running 24/7, crunching for F&H or something 😉

43 seconds for my desktop to pop up.

T-bird 1.2 @ 1.3
Iwill KK266R Plus
IBM 40GB GXP's (RAID 0)
512mb PC-133
Win98 SE

mines old system i'm on now takes about 2 mins+, i think it needs formating, but i'm getting a new PC soon so it's not so urgent

k6-2 450
128mb 100mhz SDRAM
voodoo 3
windows cough 95
one slow ass 1.7gb 5 year old hard drive (OS is on it, dunno why) master
western digital 13.6 gb 5400rpm ata 66, but motherboard only accepts 33 lol slave

as u can see i've got it set up the idiots way but i'm gonna sort that out when i get my new one

My bootup time (Desktop to pop up and finishes LOADING) is 26 seconds. I didn't disable any IDE searches or floppy seek. Everything default and nothing overclocked.

AMD Athlon T-Bird 1.4GHz
Crucial 256MB PC2100 DDR RAM
Epox 8HKA+ Motherboard
Western Digital 40GB ATA100/7200RPM HD
Seagate 40GB ATA100/7200RPM HD
Gainward GeForce3
Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM

Oh yeah, I have Windows 98 SE

Between 20 and 25 seconds.

Obviously, hard drive performance has the most significant impact here.

I remember there's a site on how to make win98se boot up faster by disabling a load crap of things. Anybody knows where it is?? 😀

You can try and disable floppy boot seek from the bios which will cut like 0.5 seconds. 🙂 On the desktop, try disabling some programs startups or gamma loader.
And the main thing is getting rid of any hard wares you don't need. Unnecessary hardwares take a while to search when booting.

I went and did all that and it cut my boot up time by 2 seconds. From the moment I press the button to desktop to pop up and stops loading (after that win98se intro music) it takes 24 seconds now. 🙂

On my laptop it takes 35 second from pressing power button to Windows XP desktop to come up and an hourglass disappear.

My desktop takes a little longer, mainly because of the SCSI and Network Card initialization routine. The total time is still around 1 min 30 seconds.

hehe... i dont even keep track. boot once a day, and the scsi card, scsi raid, and ide stuff adds up. my boottime is very long
