Poll: Best Version of Linux for Intermediate user?

i want to get acquainted w/ linux...wondering what you guys think is the best version of linux out there...

If you consider yourself a hard-core hacker, then Debian 🙂
If you have no experience with UNIX/Linux whatsoever, get the most fool-proof - Mandrake.

I like my install of Red Hat, but I am not so sure there is such a thing as a bad distro of Linux..I love it

I was a little disappointed at how much work it took for me to my GeForce2 MX running in Red Hat 6.1. That chip was just not supported by the 2.2.XX kernal, or Xfree86 3.3.XX

I think the big differences between the distros has to be the preferences for windows managers and desktop environments (gnome versus KDE, etc., etc.)

I will say that when I had my voodoo 3 2000 video card, Red Hat installed painlessly the first time

If you are new to Linux, like me, try Red Hat 7.0. It is the very latest kernel, available on CD or download. can get at auction for $3.98 + $4 ship.
Mandrake is good also. I had trouble partitioning with mandrake 7.0. Went to RedHat 6.2 and did not have the same problems.
You need to know how many partitions you want to make and the size of each before starting. Also what kind of installation (workstation, server, etc). Choose the one that gives you the most flexibility if you want to set up your own partitions. If not, choose the simplest. It will do partitioning for you.

Be SURE to back up everthing. You are very likely to loose some software if you find you have to change a partition size.
