Poll: Best oc-friendly NICs??

This is a question about the overclockability of humble 10/100 pci network cards. Yup, that little $20 piece of hardware that connects you to the internet or to home/office networks.

Does it hang you up when you overclock? Have you found any NICs that are more oc'able than others?

Recently, I built a new T-bird rig (ABIT KT7A-RAID) based on info from this and and other enthusiast sites. I can oc the 1G cpu to run at 8 x 150MHz FSB no problem, but as soon as I try to share files with other computers in my home network, I'm toast, with every file transfer being corrupted. It's not until I get the FSB down to 140MHz that any of the 3 network cards (D-link, Acer, Realtek) I've tried function without errors.

Anyone else experience this?? What is your best oc'able NIC?

Quick reply!! Intel's NICs are 3 times the price of typical ones, of course. :disgust: Any particular models? Any other brands?

Thanks for that link. It's an interesting survey, but the critical info is missing: what are the max stable PCI bus speeds? My NICs flake out beyond 36MHz (translates to 140-143 FSB). Before spending $50 on an Intel NIC that might do the same, I'd like to know what real upper limits for bus speed are...

PS --

I guess I can't totally rule out the possibility that it is subtle CPU misbehavior causing the file corruptions, although that doesn't seem likely if I can move the files around in the computer w/o problems and only run into trouble when transferring files over the network...

I've been upto 155 fsb and 1/4 multiplier. - 39Mhz PCI.

I still can't believe people skimp on NICs. Get an intel.

<edit> - that's the intel pro100.

So at 39MHz PCI, what did you try? Move large exe's or image files? (5mb or bigger) I guess I am asking how you know there was no w/ network misbehavior at this speed, because I didn't actually notice anything wrong on my network for several days with my problem computer at 145 FSB.

general network stuff, move 100meg files quakeIII and HL across cable. all looked good.

There are other cards that can't take 39 though. Maybe the overclocking forum can help?
